Dolph Lundgren stars in this live-action film version of the popular television cartoon series (based on a collection of Mattel action figures). Lundgren is He-Man, a well-muscled super-hero, battling the evil Skeletor (Frank Langella) for control of the universe. Skeletor has designs on conquering the planet Eternia, a ravaged utopia ruled over by the Sorceress of Greyskull Castle (Christina Pickles). He-Man is summoned to stop Skeletor's plans. But when the wily dwarf Gwildor (Billy Barty) utilizes his Cosmic Key, He-Man and Skeletor finds themselves transported to California. There, a waitress named Julie (Courteney Cox) and her boyfriend Kevin (Robert Duncan Mitchell) come across the Cosmic Key and become embroiled in the intergalactic battle between He-Man and Skeletor. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The critic's review was typical of most critics. They seem rate all movies "against" other catergories of movies. If you don't like a "type" of movie, then don't "rate" them. This movie is fun, and the effects are not bad for 1987. The acting was "spot on" for the characters. Is it a serious thought provoking work, no. It's exactly what it should be, a lighter, fun "fanasty" based on the cartoon. If you like this "type" of movie, then is a good one.

This is very cheesy stuff upon first (or first in a while) viewing. However, after watching it with commentary you get the impression that it was taken seriously by all involved. The budget was too low for this genre so it shows in the production. It was not for a lack of trying. Langella and Foster did their best to class it up. It was the first feature for Cox and McNeill. Some mechanical props are fantastic and cannot be duplicated with computer animation. Kids under 10 will enjoy unconditionally. This movie meets all the requirements for a remake. Though some might say it'll come too close to 2011's Thor.

Watched it with friends, one thought it was mindlessly stupid, another thought it was fantastic because of the costumes and fantastic sets. This movie has memorably bad acting, and any child of the 80s will love it. The He-Man crew gets sent to Earth and must make it back. Plenty of stuff felt like a low budget Star Wars. Lots of lasergun fights. It had Skeletor and his bumbling mineons too.

"Masters of the Universe" was a fun movie to watch. Given the basic idea of what it was about, I'll be honest with you, it was kind of dumb, but it was one of those movies that you can't stop watching, no matter how much you want to. If you like to get together with friends and have a bad movie night, this is a good movie to watch. And if you like Dolph Lundgren (and I do), this is a good movie.
