Doc Levy (Roy Scheider) is an American secret agent who has been running interference between the U.S. government and escaped Nazi war criminal Szell (Laurence Olivier). Believing that Doc has stolen a valuable cache of gems, Szell emerges from his South American hiding place and heads for New York. He has Doc killed, then kidnaps Doc's in-the-dark brother, Babe (Dustin Hoffman). Repeating the phrase "Is it safe?" over and over, Szell, a onetime concentration camp dentist, tries to extract information from Babe by performing sadistic "oral surgery" upon him. Babe, who still doesn't know about the gems, escapes, breaking his own self-imposed rule of nonviolence to defend himself against his pursuers and gearing up for sadistic revenge. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is an above average thriller with two "classic" scenes (the dental "torture" scene and Szell's trek thru the diamond district in NYC). Both Hoffman and Olivier are super solid and I found Roy Scheider was a really pleasant surprise. With all of that though, I thought the final showdown was a bit too dull, cliche, and anticlimactic. Worth watching for the two leads, but just short of perfection. Is it safe?

Laurence Olivier playing the underground Nazi dentist does a solid job on his performance. William Devane does a good job as a supporting actor, and Roy Scheider does a decent job as well. Dustin Hoffman is okay, but not nearly as good as when he did "All The President's Men", made the same year as this movie, a flick where Dustin Hoffman was absolutely SUPERB !! I think the music scores for both of these movies was done by the same person, too. Pretty good movie, overall - but the gal that played the German girl did a less-than-believable acting job - which sort of hurt the movie a lot to me.

A fantastic thriller, but the disc that I received had the infamous torture scenes omitted! That's like Rhett Buttler saying, 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a BLEEP'.

For the time period that this movie was made, this was an excellent movie with great actors.

Classic 70's film making. Suspenseful script-the golden days before special effects became the mainstay of major films. If you lived in Manhattan in the 70's, the scenery will certainly bring back memories.

I wasn't too thrilled with this movie. They could've done such a better torture scence with the dentist.
