If police lieutenant Harvey Keitel's life could get any more sordid, he could probably sell tickets. The least of his vices is gambling, which has gotten him in Dutch with the mob. He abuses his body with drugs and his soul with hookers, and now he's turned to exploiting teenage girls for sex. Keitel is forced to reassess his life while investigating the rape of a nun. Director Abel Ferrara co-wrote the screenplay with Zoe Lund, who as Zoe Tamerlis starred in Ferrara's cult classic Ms. 45. A soundtrack tune by rapper Schoolly D, which was included in the initial release of Bad Lieutenant, featured a sample from Led Zeppelin which was used without permission; the song has since been excised from the soundtrack. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a much improved print over those previously available on VHS. The story is compelling as well as repulsive. Harvey Keitel is memorable as the flawed and demented Bad Lt. The Making of commentary is a real addition to understanding the mind of Abel Ferrara.

Way too real-life. I watch movies to escape and this just didn't do it. Would do better to watch one of the phony tv "reality" shows. Sad, sad, movie.

At first viewing you are shocked by the profane habits of this rogue cop. But if you peel back the layers, as he hears the Nun's forgiveness, he is shocked, and God steers him to set those boys free, he is pained and tortured. You can totally feel his pain. It is so totally against his normal " get revenge" grain. Alas, you do have to pay for your sins, as he was murdered by his bookies in the end, but at least he salvaged his soul to the wishes of the Nun. But he fought it tooth and nail. Once in a lifetime performance.

I love Harvey Keitel and all of his movies! He is absolutely one of the best, and this has got to be one of his best! I have seen it many times before, but I just can't get enough! With movies like this and all his Tarantino movies, he is the Ace of Spades!!! SKD
