The Man With the Golden Arm (1955)

When Otto Preminger was willing to release his drug-addiction drama Man With the Golden Arm without the sanction of a Production Code seal, it proved to be yet another nail in the coffin of that censorial dinosaur. Based on the novel by Nelson Algren, the film stars Frank Sinatra as Frankie Machine, expert card dealer (hence the title). Recently released from prison, Frankie is determined to set his life in order -- and that means divesting himself of his drug habit. He dreams of becoming a jazz drummer, but his greedy wife Eleanor Parker wants him to continue his lucrative gambling activities. Since Parker is confined to a wheelchair as a result of a car accident caused by Frankie, he's in no position to refuse. Only the audience knows that Parker is not crippled, but is faking her invalid status to keep Frankie under her thumb. Gambling boss Robert Strauss wants Frankie to deal at a high-stakes poker game; terrified that he's lost his touch, Frankie asks dope pusher Darren McGavin to supply him with narcotics. When McGavin discovers that Parker is not an invalid, she kills him, and Frankie (who is elsewhere at the time) is accused of the murder. He is willing to go to the cops, but he doesn't want to show up with drugs in his system. So with the help of sympathetic B-girl Kim Novak, Sinatra locks himself up and goes "cold turkey"-a still-harrowing sequence, despite the glut of "doper" films that followed in the wake of this picture. After Parker herself is killed in a suicidal fall, the path is cleared for Frankie to pursue a clean new life with Novak. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

They said that Frank Sinatra should have won the Academy for Best Actor in this movie. Great performances by Kim Novak and Eleanor Parker and many others. This story shows the addictive results of heroine back in 50's. Frank Sinatra's outstanding performance is as good as any in film history. This movie should be viewed by all Sinatra fans and used in drug addiction programs across the country.

The above reviews are for the movie not this DVD. The film is great however this DVD is in poor condition with scratches and splices throughout. A typical public domain print. BEWARE

Sinatra is so great in this film. It's vintage-eye over a contemporary story. The way the film's content is presented is enough to see it alone. A must see.

Excellent acting! This was the first movie to explore substance abuse, and its effects on a person's life, both physically and emotionally. I would highly recommend it. Sinatra was nominated, for Best Actor, at that year's Academy Awards.

I'd like to second the warning regarding this DVD...the one I received was also a sloppy, dishonest, fly-by-night public domain rush-job, terrible image/sound with an occasional watermark in the lower right-hand corner (w_t_f?), making me think this was a TV rip, maybe even lifted off VHS. I think there's a Warner DVD with a decent transfer, but I'm not even sure if that's in print. A real shame. It's a fine film! Maybe even a key American film of the 50s. Too bad the public domain option isn't being used by real cinephiles---and honest businesspersons---instead of crooks. BB should be ashamed to carry trash like this (the DVD, that is...not the movie, which again, is excellent); but I doubt they qualify as "cinephiles" anyway.

A great cast all around. It is however, a time piece that will take you back to 50's when movies like this were so avant-garde. Mr Sinatra was terrific and Ms Novak and Ms Parker good enough to be on stage. Not an easy movie to watch, but one that will stay with us for a very long time.

My favorite part of the movie is the poster. The movie itself is very film noir, theatrical and quite boring to my taste.
