Two people with nothing in common but love find both joy and struggle in this romance which blends comedy with drama. Sam Roberts (Jeremy Elliott) is a devout member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints (better known as the Mormons) who has recently returned to the United States after doing missionary work abroad. Now working as a computer technician, Sam leads a well-ordered life, but he feels something is missing. One day, by chance Sam meets Charlene Riley, known to her friends as Charly (Heather Beers); she's free-spirited and brash where Sam is reserved, and while their personalities and beliefs seem diametrically opposed, the two discover a mutual attraction, and they fall in love. Charly teaches Sam to be spontaneous and enjoy the pleasures of life, while Sam imparts the importance of his spiritual beliefs upon his new love. However, their romance turns out to be hardly a simple thing; Charly has some serious baggage she left behind from her old hometown of New York City, and dark clouds appear on the horizon of their life together. Charly was based on the novel by Jack Weyland, America's leading Latter-Day Saints novelist, which has sold over 250,000 copies to date. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Charly allowed my wife and I to fully comprehend the precious gift of eternal love. The music is wonderful, the drama is heart-felt, mixed with a perfect blend of humor and "wit." Charly brings couples closer and singles to a sense of what matters most in life and love.

Like some others I had some serious obstacles in trying to rent this. It's fascinating to me how easily an automated system can send me the wrong movie twice in a row. Now, a year later, I tried again and got it. I should start out by saying that I'm generally a fan of Mormon cinema. Given the budgets most of the films are remarkably good. I'm curious to see what happens as this particular genre matures over time. Withint the genre, Charly's production qualities are well below par. I often felt like I was watching a 1980's made for tv movie. Most of the acting, with a couple of notable exceptions, is also below par. That said, I somehow managed to give this movie 5 stars. It is one of the most powerful love stories I have ever seen because it not only tells of eternal love, but it believes in it. Forgive its failings and listen to the message. You'll love it.

I have also had the same experience as America N in trying to watch this DVD. I have tried 3 times... the second two times it was in the CORRECT envelope (stating 2002) but was still the wrong DVD. It doesn't help that their playing time is only 1 minute different and they have identical names. I returned the DVD marking the case in red marker explaining it was not the 2002 Charly. My sisters all love this movie and my wife would like to see it too. If anyone does call customer service, please mention my 3 attempts as well.

Howver, CHARLY from 1968 has the same name, and was recieved in this case that this Mormon one should of been. Thus re-ordered, and once again recived the 1968 Charly, in a 1968 case. wonder if I should try to re-order, even after letting Blockbuster Customer Service know of this./?? honest mistake Im sure, just frustration of not seeing THIS MOVIE

Great movie after a great book! Two book sequels were written after Charly. The movie is good! The church's correct name is: "The" Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints.
