Making Love (1982)
Member Rating:
Arthur Hiller directed this drama exploring the disintegration of an ideal marriage after the husband discovers he is gay. Kate Jackson is Claire, a successful television producer, and Michael Ontkean is her husband Zack, an equally successful doctor. They enjoy eight years of married bliss until homosexual writer Bart McGuire (Harry Hamlin) appears at Zack's office. As Zack gets to know Bart, he discovers he is attracted to him. He asks Bart out to dinner, one thing leads to another, and soon Zack announces to Claire that he wants to explore his new-found sexuality with Bart. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This movie had to be controversial in it's time. A hot cast with actual male-on-male kissing scenes. WOW! Unfortunately, this film bored me. It had this wonderful story but it wasn't executed well. Wish someone would remake this today.

I agree with the comment that Making Love was controversial for its time. But by today's standards, this movie was rather lame. I admit, it IS funny to remember a time where male/male kissing was so taboo that we needed a disclaimer at the beginning of the movie. Making Love is good for its historic value; a reminder of how far we've really come in society -- but that's about it.

This movie is a touching tragedy as well as a moving love story. I feel that this movie was ahead of its time. It’s nice to see that it has made it to DVD.

Say what you will about this movie--and plenty was said about it when it premiered in 1982--but it was a breakthrough movie, one of the very first positive protrayals of gay men and the fact we have lives, fall in love, and usually don't fit conventional stereotypes. Fights actually broke out between straight and gay members of the audience in the Hollywood theater where it opened. It was marketed in the straight press as Claire's story and in the gay press as Zack's story, but even so it broke down some visibility barriers for us. 1982 was a banner year for gay-themed mainstream movies with Making Love, Partners, Personal Best, and Victor/Victoria. But, Making Love was the one no one could laugh at...

Here are the things I didn't like about this movie: The love 'em and leave 'em attitude. The cheating. More cheating. The promiscuity. More promiscuity. And several times throughout the movie, the characters talk to you as if they were having a one-on-one conversation with the movie watcher. The movie is a bit slow at times, and you'll notice this from the very beginning, when the main actors' faces are shown for several seconds without explanation, and the words "making love" are very slowly painted on the screen. The acting was good. The storyline was just okay...it reminded me too much of a soap opera...and I don't like soaps. It's a good warning to those men out there who think they should get married...just because. Don't screw with other people. Admit who you are and run with it.

I saw this movie at a drive in theater back in the 80's. Kate Jackson is always great with her acting, the gay characters were believeable. When I see Harry Hamlin on the tv, I still see him as the gay character. Interesting movie to see two men kissing back in the 1980's. You can see this everywhere (adam lambert concert, cable) thirty years later.

I saw this fim when it first came out..rather daring at the time..Michael Ontkean does an Ok job..of course it's difficult to understand how he could leave such a beautiful and successful wife..didn't ring true especially when they were looking at the house they were about to buy, etc..Harry Hamlin comes accross as a rather self serving guy..ok..he performs as his character would be expected to do..all in all the film leaves one wondering about the human condition..3 stars!
