I am still searching for a 'Butterfly' that fulfills my expectations of one of my favorite composers, Puccini. The film adaption (also available here) is pretty good, but is still not live opera. This one is a step in the right direction. (I actually own this title) Truly a unique recording, as it is played out in an huge, old Roman arena in Verona. They show the arena from the outside, and the audience in the outdoor venue as the sun slowly sets and darkness falls. You really get the feeling of being in Italy. The male cast is excellent. They really endear themselves to you with great acting and singing. However, the title character comes off as a cranky old lady, even though she is supposed to be a brokenhearted young girl. I got no sense of sympathy for her struggles. Such pity, since everything else is very classy. OPERA LOVERS: We need to band together and rate more movies.
