This stunning, post-apocalyptic action thriller from director George Miller stars Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, a policeman in the near future who is tired of his job. Since the apocalypse, the lengthy, desolate stretches of highway in the Australian outback have become bloodstained battlegrounds. Max has seen too many innocents and fellow officers murdered by the bomb's savage offspring, bestial marauding bikers for whom killing, rape, and looting is a way of life. He just wants to retire and spend time with his wife and son but lets his boss talk him into taking a peaceful vacation and he starts to reconsider. Then his world is shattered as a gang led by the evil Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) murders his family in retaliation for the death of one of its members. Dead inside, Max straps on his helmet and climbs into a souped-up V8 racing machine to seek his bloody revenge. Despite an obviously low budget and a plot reminiscent of many spaghetti Westerns, Mad Max is tremendously exciting, thanks to some of the most spectacular road stunts ever put on film. Cinematographer David Eggby and stunt coordinator Grant Page did some of their best work under Miller's direction and crafted a gritty, gripping thrill ride which spawned two sequels, numerous imitations, and made Mel Gibson an international star. One sequence, in which a man is chained to a car and must cut off a limb before the machine explodes is one of the most tense scenes of the decade. The American version dubbed all the voices -- including Gibson's -- in a particularly cartoonish manner. Trivia buffs should note that Max's car is a 1973 Ford Falcon GT Coupe with a 300 bhp 351C V8 engine, customized with the front end of a Ford Fairmont and other modifications. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

I saw the American premier of MM and found it to be distressingly violent, but Gibson was so luminously beautiful that he kept me in my seat. Years have passed and I had forgotten much about the film. The surprise was that MM is tame when compared to the recent level of violence in films, and within our society. This time around I could enjoy the real story line about relationships he had with his family and co-workers and ponder what apocalyptic event had caused the disintegration of society in Australia. I also got to hear his voice instead of the dubbed-into-American-English version that played at the premiere. Now I want to see Thunderdome!

Action was terrific as was Mel. I just don't understand why big Fifi waters his plants without a shirt but with a scarf around his neck.

slow getting started then ends quickly. it was kinda weird to me, maybe because its australian and from the 70s. didnt seem post-apocalyptic, just rural. overall i liked it though. wasnt really like anything ive seen before. and the bikers are crazy, reminded me of the dudes from clockwork orange.

Not put together as well as the next 2 mad max movies. This one was kind of boring but had some cool car sceens. Pales in comparrison to the latter two. DOES NOT HAVE A POST-APOCALYPTIC SETTING.

This movie has a lot of hype but it was way too slow for me. It feels like their are 20 minutes of completely meaningless footage- you could use this for exposition- but in this nothing is explained! It's by no means a bad movie, despite these gripes I have. There are a couple super badass momments, and a few really fun cheesey momments, but all in all it's not enough for a full hearted recomendation.

Boring cheese with a few car pile ups. I turned the subtitles on to get a better understanding ( a lot of the actors were talking over one another in the beginning) and I swear half the dialouge in the movie was coming from scanner/police radios in the vehicles. It's already been stated by others, but, this DOES NOT HAVE A POST-APOCALYPTIC SETTING. Pales in comparrison to the latter two.
