Luther (1974) Reviews

Luther (1974)
Member Rating:
Adapted for the screen by Edward Anhalt from the play by John Osborne, Luther stars Stacy Keach as religious leader and "heretic" Martin Luther. In minimalist fashion, the film traces Luther's disillusionment with the Catholic Church, and his eventual spearheading of the Reformation movement. Over the course of the film, Keach ages from an ingenuous seminarian to a disgruntled, middle-aged firebrand. Director Guy Green does little to cinematize the material, instead favoring a theatrical approach and thus allowing the rich dialogue to be better appreciated. Luther was a production of the American Film Theatre. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Overly theatrical, did not ring true.

I took this movie with a grain of salt. For being such an important figure in religious history, this movie was not given the attention the subject deserved. Luther had the courage to speak out. His message changed the way the world viewed Christianity. He took it to the masses. The movie focused way too much on his inner angst and not enough on the import of his message.

Good acting and a decent retelling of Luther's life with a cameo by Judi Dench as Kate Luther. Worth watching

Martin Luther was not confused as he is portrayed in this movie. He was willing to die for what he believed in. That is not a confused man. Other movies portray him as a bold leader.
