Fidel (2001)

Fidel Castro is one of the world's best known and most recognizable political leaders, but he is also among the most mysterious. While Castro became a household name after overthrowing the rule of Fulgenico Batista and became the head of Cuba's new socialist government, little is known of his private life or the man behind the façade of his shaggy beard and omnipresent cigar. Fidel is a documentary by filmmaker Estela Bravo, who combines vintage newsreel footage with exclusive recent interviews which offer an insight into both Castro the leader, struggling to face the political and economic realities of the post-Soviet global environment, and Castro the man, as he tours his childhood home, goes swimming, and visits with his friends. Fidel also includes interviews with people who know or have met Castro, including Nelson Mandela, Muhammed Ali, Harry Belafonte, Alice Walker, Ted Turner, and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A leader of a country that provides health care, education, and affordable housing to all its citizens should not be overlooked. Keep an open mind and check this film out.

Very informative. Like him or not, Fidel is true to his ideals. I went searching for the story of Cuba in the second half of the Twentieth Century, and this movie brought it home vividly. 5 Stars. Thanks...

this amazing documentary gives you the real story behind the rise of Cuba's dictator. I had never taken the time to learn his story and now I see him and Cuba much differently.

Surprisingly engaging and eye-opening documentary on the man Fidel Castro. No matter what your views or opinion this documentary has something to offer. Very well done.

One could call this a very poor documentary, given how obviously biased it is. However, keeping that in mind and taking the film with a proverbial grain of salt, it does have the redeeming quality of presenting Castro and "socialist" Cuba in a manner seldom heard in over the US propaganda machine. While the film ignores or sidesteps the many black marks on castro's regime, there are no outright lies. And it DOES provide the very valid (imo) perspective that the US is as much, and likely more, to blame for cuba's economic trouble as castro.

I like the fact that someone has the decency to write a true version of what Fidel Castro is about. Affordable housing, education&health care is a basic human need; and Castro provides it for his people. This without the help of the U.S. Amazing&informative documentary; 5 stars!

this is absolute garbage. Extreme left-wing propaganda. Definitely not an honest documentary.

The man did a lot to get where h's at but it didn't tell you how he's managed to stay there.

This movie is just shameful. Fidel Castro and his regime are responsible for the murder of an estimated 15,000 people, the jailing and torturing of about 100,000 political prisoners, the impoverishment of the wealthiest country in Latin America, and the mass migration of about 20% of the country’s population. I can not think of another serial killer in the world (along with his buddy Che Guevara) that has received as much good press, accolades, and praise. I am just sick of it.

To people like these two guys who barely know about Cuba, its people and the real life the cubans live this "documentary" may look great and informative. This woman, Estela Bravo is nothing more than other of so many Fidel's puppets, if you check her history you will see a way of life in making Fidel related stuff. In the 40's Hitler had the same kind of people making documentary for him, maybe you'll like Hitler too based on documentary. I don't recommend this movie to anyway trying to know more about Cuba, about the dictator, please look for anything better.
