Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel about the sexual, emotional, and chemical interactions of a group of wealthy and amoral college students is brought to the screen in this adaptation from writer and director Roger Avery. Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek) is a student at Camden College, a well-respected private school on the East Coast. Sean is attracted to Lauren Hynde (Shannyn Sossamon), a high minded and seemingly unapproachable coed, while Lauren is infatuated with Victor (Kip Pardue), a handsome but self-centered ladies' man. Lauren's empty-headed roommate, Lara (Jessica Biel), is also attracted to Victor, while he has no qualms about being involved with both. Lauren used to date affected snob Paul Denton (Ian Somerhalder), but Paul, a bisexual, currently lusts after Sean. Meanwhile, friendly campus drug dealer Rupert (Clifton Collins Jr.) finds a ready market for cocaine among his classmates; Sean, a steady customer, finds himself financially embarrassed and begins dealing drugs to help pay off his debts, while leading Paul on for his ready supply of marijuana. The Rules of Attraction also features Eric Stoltz as Mr. Lance Lawson, Faye Dunaway and Swoosie Kurtz as semi-concerned parents, and Fred Savage as one of Sean's customers. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

An exagerrated view of modern day college life, yet invocative of many familiar emotions. The characters are all negativley influenced by thier emotional tie in with one of the main characters, some on a superficial level, and some on an emotionally destructive one.

The story line isn't bad, but the camera work is poor as is the text of the show. I watched the first 20 minutes and fell asleep. The movie seems to be a series of flashbacks so as to say, "well, here's what happened earlier and to explain this scene, here's what happened earlier again." Not much to this movie...

This movie was about as much fun as being hung upside down from my fingernails. That Dawson's Creek guy is a complete D bag.

This was a weird movie, not sure I even liked it...it didn't really have a plot, maybe it was just me!! I agree that it was an exaggerated view of college life, partying and all, but didn't really have a good ending...just weird!

This was just a dumb movie. I thought American Psycho was absolute genius, so I was really excited to see this, but I was very disappointed. I was unimpressed with the cinematography (playing scenes in reverse was overdone and who really wants to see James Van Der Beek taking a crap?). The characters were unendearing and the portrayal of college life was pretty ridiculous. I went to a "party school" and there wasn't nearly as much sex and drugs going on as in this movie. I somehow managed to finish watching the whole thing just to see what happened, but barely.

This is a bit of a strange movie about college kids but NOT a typical college movie to say the least. Most of the movie shows each of the main characters seeing a scene within their own perspective. It was weird, a little sad (yes, the bathroom scene)but good. The music is great - I bought the C.D.

Film has eye candy and an edge but not as much as Storytelling or others. It's divided into many chapters, some are fairly entertaining but most are dull and plodding. Fair amount of nudity but the major characters don't get nude. This is a dark cartoon fantasy about college life. Cool to see Dawson playing a mean pr*ck. Censoring BB doesn't allow adult language "pr*ck"

Brooding, dangerous, daring. Loved it all and was thinking of friends to recommend the film to. JVDB was great! Played against type and brought a sinister "everyman" to light. Really innovative film making.
