French director Olivier Assayas departs from his usual dramas with Demonlover, a wild thriller about corporate intrigue, hardcore sex Internet sites, and Japanese animé. Wealthy French business man Henri-Pierre Volf (Jean-Baptise Malartre) assigns Diane de Monx (Connie Nielson) to make a deal with TokyoAnime, a company at the forefront of three-dimensional adult animation, after his former assistant, Karen (Dominique Reymond), is kidnapped. Diane, however, is actually a spy for a different company. Standing in her way is another headstrong business woman (Gina Gershon), and Diane's assistant, Elise Lipsky (Oscar nominee Chloe Sevigny) who questions her boss' morality. This is not family entertainment or for those who prefer their stories delivered in a more straightforward way. The subject matter is pretty rough edged, however, and will turn many people off. It is, however, technically well done (I particularly enjoyed the hand held camera work during a chase scene – it was not gimmicky but conveyed the experience very well), and the acting is good. This is not a scary movie, nobody makes love with a demon from below, but I can understand why women would have a hard time watching this. It is not a “feel good” movie or a good first date experience If you try this out, stick with it to the very end, as the last few minutes could either sum it all up nicely for you and give you something to think about, or not.

Stylistically high energy, high tech fun, with a soundtrack by Sonic Youth. Compare this with "Summer Hours" or "'Les Destinees'" and you'll see that Olivier Assayas has as wide a range of styles as any current filmmaker I can think of. That said, this surreal, intentionally obtuse story of corporate intrigue centering around world domination of anime porn, makes less and less sense, climaxing with an "ironic twist" you can see coming from several miles off, and leaving one with the feeling that the film is slightly less intelligent than one might have hoped. It did improve on a second viewing. While the ending still bugged me, the odd, slightly irrational middle felt more in control and intentional, more a comment on the main character than I caught the first time around.

I got the Japanese version, which lead to many WTF moments, but it was still OK. The English version would get a better review. If you like corporate intrigue, with the business of porn, you might like this. I can't highly recommend it, but Connie and Chloe deliver good performances.

This was one of the worst movies I've seen. I agree w/ my fellow critics. Bad movie, No Plot(it didn't even make sense)! Very slow, very bad acting and change of languages didn't help either. Monologue was deceiving also, there was no nudity or sex as described :(
