Dinotopia (2002)
Member Rating:
Based on the children's books by author/illustrator James Gurney, the three-part, six-hour ABC miniseries Dinotopia got under way when a pair of teenaged half brothers, Karl and David Scott, took over the controls of their father Frank's (Stuart Wilson) private plane. Not surprisingly, the boys crashed the plane into the ocean, whereupon they were washed on the shore of an unchartered continent. While searching for their missing dad, Karl and David wandered into Waterfall City, the capitol of Dinotopia, a hidden civilization where human beings and dinosaurs peacefully coexisted. In fact, some of the dinosaurs, notably a neurotic Stenonychosaurus named Zippo, possessed human intelligence and spoke perfect English. Among the many rules in Dinotopia was the edict that, once an outsider arrived, he or she was never allowed to leave. As Karl and David prepared to take their rightful places in their new surroundings, both boys developed a strong bond with young Marion (Katie Carr), who was on the verge of becoming a "matriarch" of the Dinotopian society. Unfortunately, the incursion of vicious carnivores, not to mention an unanticipated human villain, threatened to destroy Dinotopia and everyone living on the island. Decked out with special effects courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop and the British FrameStore CFC, Dinotopia was designed as the pilot for a proposed weekly ABC adventure series. Co-produced by Disney Television and Hallmark Entertainment, the miniseries premiered as an episode of the Wonderful World of Disney anthology on May 12, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This film is a must see for young adults (and teens as well), but the carnivorous dinosaurs may be too scary and life-like for younger children. The story is well thought-out, the dinosaurs are top-knotch, the music composition is beautiful, and it's all a learning experience. The entire story is roughly 6 hours long (covering both disks), but can be watched in parts. There is bonus material on the disks for education and games. Entirely educational as well as entertaining. As for the rating, while there are prehistoric creatures (both intelligant or viscious), there is no bloodshed or curse words. This was an tv show made for kids. Even so, as an adult, I enjoyed watching it and recommend it as a family show.

I really can't say it much better than Kelli... It is a must-see for anyone with an appetite for adventure, mystery, and history. Not only is it fast-paced, and educational, it has lessons to be learned... Lessons we all need help with, I think. Just please don't try those other versions of Dinotopia. They pale in comparison. Don't miss out on this fantastic adventure! I almost wonder if it wasn't a novel first.

I thought this was a cool movie and my kids really liked it and seeing all the dinosaurs ... It was also crazy to see the guy who played as Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) in Prison Break TV Series in a previous less serious role.

This is a very good mini series. I watch it every time it shows on SciFi Channel.

actually scott b you did get a bad disc the second disk u put in was correct in being the actual second disk but the first disk was obviously not the real first disk of the dinotopia mini series but an entirely different show all together . the mini series itself is very well done i remember when it came out wen i was about 13 and loved it , i have periodically watched it every few years and still like it alot to this day; iam 22 now and could really care less about the life lessions lol . they had tried to make an actual show out of the mini series but failed miserably mostly due to the fact that they didnt have the money that they had in the mini series the acting was abismle and the random and and almost drunk plot lines were porno grade at best. please do not base the awesome mini series againt that mistake of the show

I'm not sure how I missed this movie in 2002. I caught it on Sci Fi this weekend and it was excellent. I wish I had noticed it here.

It was just dumb, boring and long...I kept skipping chapters and nothing exciting really happened... The other brother was a wimp ad he was getting annoying! I didn't really get the ending.

I have no idea how anyone can give this any stars. There is no beginning to this. I put in disk one and it starts with a kid waking up from a dream that was not a dream. Disk two has a movie on it with an entirely different cast and it does not appear to have a begining either. It starts out that the kids are in court for trying to escape. What the heck is going on?? Did I get a bad disk?? Does the movie never go into how they got there or how they were assigned jobs or any of the actual essence of what is going on?/ I had always heard that the books were very well done, but this movie is pure crap on par with Barney.
