The Longest Yard (1974) Reviews

The Longest Yard (1974)
Member Rating:
Ex-football star Paul Crewe (Burt Reynolds) ends up in a prison run by sadistic sports-nut Warden Hazen (Eddie Albert). Strong-armed into forming an inmate football team, Crewe manages to instill an esprit de corps previously lacking in the prisoners' lives. Besides, they now have the chance to beat the guards' football team, headed by the hissable Capt. Knauer (Ed Lauter). Hazen orders Crewe to throw the match; otherwise, Crewe will never get the pardon he's been promised. The football game that follows consumes nearly a third of the picture. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Not one of the better football out there. Although it is a classic, the remake with Sandler is much better. Sorry Burt.

I've seen both versions of this movie and all I can say is the 2005 version is off the charts, much better than the old version. I fell asleep watching Burt Reynolds trying to be all that. A very big snore.

Don't bother watching this movie. This is not a film for children! Lots of racial slurs, swearing, and even some domestic violence. On top of that, it is too long and not even that funny. The only reason I gave it two stars was getting to see Burt Reynolds in his hey-day. The 2005 remake with Adam Sandler is ten times funnier, shorter, and much more entertaining.

I did enjoy the film because Burt was in it. I do have to say that I really enjoyed "Mean Machine" more. This is the british version of the movie and they are playing, what we Americans call soccer. If you are a fan of Burt Reynolds you will enjoy this movie. I guess I thought there would be more to the movie and I do not have the words to describe what I felt while watching it. It just lacked something. I do feel you should watch this before watching the updated version by Adam Sandler.

I'd never seen this movie before. I really like Burt Reynolds movies from this same era. It was worth my time. The sound quality seemed muddy.

Good movie with a good story line.

Without a doubt a doubt the remake is much, much better. The only reason this movie got an R rating for the extreme amount of profanity that's used for no apparent reason. It's decent though, it has a few funny moments.
