Food of Love (2002)
Member Rating:
Adapted from David Leavitt's book The Page Turner, Food of Love tells the story of a cross-generational romance between two men. Paul (Kevin Bishop), a sexually repressed teenager, is an aspiring pianist who gets an opportunity to work as a page turner for Richard Kennington (Paul Rhys), a renowned pianist who also happens to be Paul's idol. A flirtation ensues between the two men after a concert one night, but further possibilities are thwarted by the meddling of Paul's neurotic mother Pamela (Juliet Stevenson). When Paul and Richard meet again six months later in Barcelona, they begin where they left off, tumbling headlong into a passionate affair despite the continued intrusion of Pamela, who believes that Richard is flirting with her. The affair is further complicated by the presence of Mansourian (Allan Corduner), Richard's manager and lover, who is suspicious of the relationship between Richard and Paul. Unable to deal with the situation, Richard flees to New York, and when he and his young lover finally meet again, Paul is a Julliard student engaged in an affair with yet another middle-aged man. Food of Love was screened at the 2002 Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

It is unfortunate that such an interesting story could be acted so poorly. The characters were unoriginal and unpassionate. I was unmoved but the relationships between the characters and disappointed with the ending.

The movie started off well. Somewhere in the middle, I think about when Rhys split off from the trio, the movie went astray. All of a sudden there were sub-plots everywhere. Kevin Bishop (Paul) started off with seemingly some acting ability. At that mid-point in the movie, he and Juliet Stevenson went to a different movie or planet. Alan Corduner came into the picture more and he was flat, flat, flat. I kept fast forwarding the movie just to end it. As it was it took three days to watch it. I wouldn't recommend it to a single soul.

This movie was terrible. The acting is poor, the script is stilted and what could have been a really good movie turned out to be a waste of time.

The fault here was the actors. The writing wasn't great, but was okay. The actors, however, failed to pull it off. The mother, arguably the central character, plays the role as semi-comical. I think we suppose to see the son as flawed (why is he sleeping with all these older men just to promote his own career? or is it self-validation? or is it finding a new father?), is played much too sympatically. Who are we suppose to identify with? I think with the mother, but we really can't given the way she's played. In short, a movie with potential that it didn't fulfull.

This movie was pretty decent. The actor who plays Paul is a good actor but sometimes overdid it with the whole i'm an innocent rich child who knows nothing of the world attitude. The actor who plays Richard looks odd at time, i don't know if that was done on purpose or its just an accident or the way he looks in real life. The mother is funny sometimes but her neurotic mannerisms get annoying sometimes. Despite all this the move was alright but somewhere in the middle it just lost its way like hte people making hte movie just gave up on it. It had not particular direction and it was given a very abrupt and pointless resolution.

I liked this film, but it was certainly flawed. The acting, for the most part, was quite bad. Juliet Stevenson had some good moments. Paul Rhys has a somewhat disturbing look about him, and at times looked heavily made up. The Spanish locations were wonderful though and certainly enhanced this film. Glad I saw it.

I love drama movies, but this one had it and then lost it. It started off really well and then I don't know it seemed to lose everything. Other than that if you are looking for a movie about the coming of age of a young kid who had not fully understood his sexuality then this is one of those movies. The reason that I say it could have been more is that it seems like the director just dropped the ending without bringing it into focus, just dropping the ending without bringing the middle into the picture. But other than that it was pretty good, I enjoyed watching this movie, alone... hahaha

I really liked the love story in this movie...it had a lot of scenes that kept me watching and wondering what would happen next...good actors.

There are good parts to this film. The main charactor is hot but they go overboard in this film with everyone telling him so. He poor acting surfaces everytime he gets into a fight with his mother. Other than that, he is a puppy with all the guys. It seems like the writer and director ran out of ideas and just made up the story as they went along.

Kevin Bishop, the star, was so sincere and at time so beautiful to see and understand. Just a few more acting lessons please. He has and deserves the best. Juliet Stevenson has made it. She is such a charm, even dramatically amusing, and helps keep it all together. Great all arounding acting. Gereat screenplay and cinematography, production, and direction. It's breathtaking becasue it touches the heart so gently through its handsome star, Kevin Bishop, as well as all the other very well-cast others.
