Following up on his horror smash hits Ringu and Ringu 2, Hideo Nakata directs this supernatural psychological drama about a middle aged woman struggling to cling to her sanity. Yoshimi Matsubara (Hitomi Kuroki) is the midst of a nasty divorce with her thuggish, abusive husband over the custody of their five year old daughter Ikuko (Rio Kanno). In Japan's family court system, which is heavily weighted towards the mother, Yoshimi case would normally be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, Yoshimi has a history of mental imbalance as a result of her miserable, emotionally starved childhood. The transition from housewife to independent working woman has been stressful. She has moved into a fleabag of an apartment -- completely with a constantly leaking roof -- and has had little luck finding employment. Worse, Ikuko and then Yoshimi start seeing a creepy little girl dressed in yellow suddenly appearing in apartment. With a growing sense of dread, Yoshimi starts having outbursts not only in family court, but also at her daughter's kindergarten. When she slumps into a coma after the end of one such fit, she realizes what the girl in yellow is trying to communicate. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

If you liked Ringu, I think you will like this movie too. It's my kind of horror film, creepy not gory, with an emphasis on human relationships. I liked the slow buildup of tension, the scarrieness. people who like fast paced movies might want to pass on this one but for me, I thought it was great. It is very well made, especially for a horror film. It is dubbed too, for those who can't stand subtitles. The characterizations are very well drawn. I think I'll skip the English version, the Japanese version is usually better anyway.

Apparently some people are not open to different styles of horror as you see from the reviews below. I thought this movie was very good and I like Japanese horror movies. It's not all about sex, drugs, gore, and obnoxiousness all the time. In fact I thought the US version was pathetic compared to this version.

comparing the original to the US-made film, The US-made film brings more drama than scary stuff, while the original gives us the creeps. The original is better because it's shorter, and u don't have to deal with the backstory the English film gives out.

I really liked this movie however the DVD I got was damaged. It got stuck in several places so I had to FF and then RWD to see what I had missed. Took longer to see the movie. Also ruined the ending.

The actors were okay as stated in a previous review. The movie itself - awful. This was a total waste of my time trying to even watch it.

This was a disappointment considering how much I enjoyed "Ringu". It was extremely slow and predictable, with minimal scares. You aren't missing anything if you skip this film.

TOO SLOW TO BE GOOD ALTHOUGH THE STORY WAS ALRIGHT. REMEMBER TO PICK UP YOUR KIDS FROM SCHOOL.

Be Advised, this is the Japanese (English dubbed) version, NOT the American Version with Jennifer Connelly and Tim Roth!

because I didn't. I didn't notice that this was not the US version until I popped in the DVD. I tried to watch it anyway but it was very slow and I didn't get past the first 1/2 hr.
