Lonely Are the Brave (1962)
Member Rating:
Although it never quite escapes the pitfalls of pretension, this film was Kirk Douglas's bid for the affections of the art house crowd, and it remains one of his best efforts. The star plays unreconstructed "rugged individual" Jack Burns, who rides throughout the modern west knocking down man-made fences. Visiting his equally rebellious friend Paul Bondi (Michael Kane), Burns deliberately gets himself thrown in jail to be nearer his pal. Frustrated that Bondi doesn't want to join Burns on the road, Burns breaks out of jail, thereby becoming a fugitive. His trail is dogged by Sheriff Johnson (Walter Matthau), a frustrated frontiersman who secretly admires the freewheeling Burns. Meanwhile, a truck driver (Carroll O'Connor) is ominously driving down the highway with a truckload of toilets. If you think there's supposed to be some symbolism in this seemingly peripheral character, you're absolutely right. Bill Raisch, a genuine amputee who played the one-armed man on TV's The Fugitive, is Douglas' surly opponent in the café brawl sequence. Filmed on location in New Mexico, Lonely are the Brave was adapted by Dalton Trumbo from Edward Abbey's novel Brave Cowboy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a good movie even tho it is a little bit hokey. Kirk Douglas did a very good job of acting in this & the horse Whiskey stole the show!

Very good movie, and good to see Kirk Douglas playing someone other than his usual swash buckling type. Playing a good and capable man with strong values and scruples and loyalty. I kind of liked his horse, "Whiskey" too. The last cowboy, very interesting as are Kirk Douglas comments about the movie too in the Special Features portion.

Very interesting movie with old west meets new west. The story line was good and followed through to the end. The ending was quite a surprise and well done. i really enjoyed the interview with Kurt Douglas.

I wondered if this film held up since I last saw it at age 15. It does! Kirk Douglas as his best, his most charming. It's like a "Cool Hand Luke" out West. The special feature "Tribute to Lonely Are the Brave" was especially moving and interesting.

I have found a priceless DIAMOND in the world of movies with this one. It touches your heart, fight choreography is realistc and smart, it has a message at the end that makes you think. If I could change something on this movie would be, the title to " The Last Cowboy" The acting is very natural and excelent, The horse Whiskey performance was superb.
