In this tribute to the man considered by many to be the father of the science fiction genre, a reporter interviewing author H.G. Wells makes a startling revelation that could forever change mankind's relationship with the universe. Upon arriving at Wells' London home on a fog enshrouded evening in 1946, newspaper reporter Ellen McGillivray is regaled with tales of time travel dating back to Wells' days at London's Imperial College of Science. It seems that Wells and colleague Jane Robbins stumbled across a previously undiscovered rift in time during a series of midnight experiments, and though the pair swore to keep the discovery a secret, the experience forever bonded the adventurous scientists. When Ellen accepts Wells' outlandish tales at face value, his shock at her lack of disbelief is countered by the revelation that she is an underground government agent posing as a reporter in hopes of discovering the secrets of a crystal orb rumored to hold the secrets of the entire universe. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
The description is misleading, this is not a movie, but rather several short stories which are like a british tv series. But they are entertaining if you like turn of the 20th century old england type stories...kind of like sherlock holmes or jack the ripper type time frame stuff. These are sci-fi type stories and are also kind of like ripleys believe it or not stories. Definitely "G" rated stuff, no one ever dies, no nudity or language or violence. Just fun entertaining old time mysteries.
As a Wells fanatic, I was RIVETED for the whole 4.5 hours (ONE SITTING!) and didn't want it to end. WONDERFUL construct has H.G. and his beloved Jane as unwitting adventurers, helping solve WEIRD mysteries that would inspire his great stories (think of them as half Nick & Nora Charles, half Mulder & Scully). Tom Ward and Katy Carmichael are simply marvelous together as H.G. and Jane. This came to TV as three 2-hour installments, with two tales per installment, and could have been assumed to be a series pilot. IF ONLY!!! Nothing biographical here, which is JUST FINE...his actual life was CONDIDERABLY less entertaining than these wondrous flights of fancy!
Absolute Six [6] Star Stories. Intriguing, wondrous & fun. This needs another edition. Sorry to say... but I need subtitles so I can catch all the dialog, I'm kind'a slow with British speech. Had to watch it 4 times to catch the subtleties.
