Gus Van Sant returned to his roots in experimental filmmaking with this offbeat feature, whose dialogue was entirely improvised by its two person cast. Two men named Gerry (played by Matt Damon and Casey Affleck) are driving through the desert regions of Death Valley, traveling towards an unknown destination. They pull over and set out on foot, presuming they're getting close to what they've come to find. Before long, Gerry and Gerry are both lost in an unforgiving desert without food, water, or other provisions, and the harder they try to find their way back to their car, they only dig themselves deeper and deeper into the desert. Gus Van Sant originally began shooting Gerry in Argentina, but was soon dissatisfied with the weather and the terrain, opting to start over in California and Utah; the film premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
Because this movie is so bad, so boring and yet you keep on hoping something will happen that you can't stop watching it.
here is where it gets funny. tell someone you know that this is a GREAT movie that they HAVE to watch it and then listen to their reaction after they see it. We have done this to a couple of people and we spend so much time laughing after they tell us how much they HATE this movie. I wasted a few bucks down at blcokbuster, but watching our freinds reactions was worth it. Would I spend the few bucks again? Yes. Would I watch the movie again? NO!!!
The only reason I gave the movie half a star is because the scenery is beautiful. I kind of understand what they were trying to do, but I don't believe two men lost out there would only have 3 conversations (I think) the whole time. There was no blaming, no nothing. Even 2 really quiet people would have more dialogue than that. Then the ending was ridiculous. No motive is shown for what he does. I can't believe I wasted my time, even after fast forwarding a lot.
I never thought a movie could be so boring. There was hardly any dialogue and they focused on the same exact scene for endless periods of time without any speaking.....SO BORING!!!!! It reminded me of Open Water, and that was even better than this movie.
This is an absolute waste of time. I know this is supposed to be a character study and an arthouse picture, but there are limits to my toleration. If this movie would have come to a satisfying conclusion, or had any point whatsoever, I could pass it. But this piece of junk fails on every level start to finish. Let me save you all alot of time. Two guys walk through the desert for almost 2 hours. Almost no dialogue for the whole movie. Then it ends and you literally want to break the DVD in half.
Was there a point to this movie? Other than making me thirsty and annoyed, I was so not getting what point they were trying to make. Do yourself a favor, don't rent this one--unless you have insomnia. It might help with that.
If you want to get the feeling of what exactly it would be like to be lost in the desert, watch this movie. Since there is barely any dialogue or anything happening at all, you really get the feeling of what it would like to actually go through that. This movie would not be for people with a short attention span or for someone who needs to be constantly entertained. (which is normally how I am, but somehow I couldn't stop watching!!)
On a rating of 1 to 10, 1 being the least boring and 10 being the most boring I would rate Gerry as 20. If one was made to watch this movie I would call it cruel and unusual punishment. I have watched many, many movies but none as boring as this one Terrible movie.
I don't ever need to get hopelessly lost in the desert now, after seeing Gerry. I have now been there. Gus Van Sant places you, the viewer, in the same predicament as his two young guys (both named Gerry), and being lost in the desert is not exciting or fun. It's scary, hopeless and desolate. The film is beautiful to look at, and it is mesmerizing and sad. This is art, like it or not. Many people will not get this type of experimental film, but I'm glad I saw it.
Depressing material, extremely slow all the way through and confusing toward the end. I did not like this movie and would not recommend u waste ur time viewing it. Worst movie i've seen in a long time.
