Little Vera (1988)

The title character of the Russian Little Vera is a headstrong teenage girl, played by Natalya Negoda. To the dismay of her parents, Vera lives only for the moment, making no provision for her future. She'd rather hang out at local cafes in garish makeup and provocative clothing. A chance meeting with handsome student Sergei (Andrei Sokolov) develops into a sexual relationship. Her parents send out Vera's brother (Alexander Alexeyev-Negreba) to talk some sense into her, which proves to be doubly dicey when it turns out that the brother is an old acquaintance of the rebellious Sergei. Vera lies, saying that she's gotten pregnant by Sergei, so he obligingly marries her and moves in with her family, which serves only to make matters worse, as Vera's drunken father (Yuri Nazarov) ends up stabbing his son-in-law. Persuaded to lie about the incident to keep her father out of jail, Vera takes her family's side. A last-minute tragedy is barely averted, but the audience gets the distinct feeling that Vera's problems with her family in particular and her life in general are far from over. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The title of this film is actually a play of words untranslatable into English. Russian name Vera is equivilant to the English name Faith. So the literal film title is "Little Faith". Just FYI. This movie was a big hit and rather controversial during the Soviet "perestroyka" times. It has to be understood in the context of the time period.

I am a big fan of Russian Films and this one did not dissapoint! I was mesmerized by going back in time to the 1980's time period. The story was emotional and really made one think about what it is to be a responsible adult. Russia was not an easy country to grow up in.

A full taste of Soviet and Western decadence merging. Surprisingly entertaining for a movie in which I came to wish that all the main characters would commit suicide. Very good if you are trying to find relationships more dysfunctional than your own.

The fact that the movie won European Acamedy award, speaks for itself. Little Vera is a gorgeous, independent, bad-mouting, short-skirt wearing, good-for-nothing high-school graduate, whos has yet to find a reason to be excited about anything, so for now she just hangs around with her friends. She has a friend who desperately wants to get her to bed, but she is not easy :) Her life takes a turn for better when she meets a college student she falls in love with, and they eventually move in together to live with her parents. Well, the parents dont like the guy, and he reciprocates by getting into a shouting match with the head of the house who stubs the young fellow with a fork or something. I felt a bit depressed after watching the movie (I watched it second time), but I think movie is worth watching, the acting is solid and so is the story telling.
