A woman who has committed a capital crime finds love and strength behind bars in this hard-edged independent drama from Canada. Johnny Greyeyes (Gail Maurice) is a woman from a Native North American family who has gained firsthand knowledge of the hard side of life. After her abusive father was shot and killed, Johnny was found guilty of the crime and had to serve a long sentence in a lock-up where most of the inmates literally fight for their lives. Behind bars, Johnny makes friends with Lana (Columpa C. Bobb), a tough but good-hearted fellow inmate. Johnny and Lana's relationship soon graduates from friendship to love, and Lana gives Johnny the sort of affection and support she never received from her family. But as Johnny is about to be released, she finds she has to reconcile her new life with Lana with her desire to hold what's left of her family together; she's especially worried about her younger brother, Clay (Jonathan Fisher), an unsuccessful musician who is sinking into the ways of a small-time crook. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is an interesting story, but it only touches the surface. It's not very indepth at all so as a result it seems somewhat fractured. It was okay.

This is probably one of the best films I've seen in a long time. It is a very moving portrayal of a young Native woman's horrible ordeal as a prison inmate in Canada; the unrelenting misery is balanced by her intense love affair with another woman inmate. The most immpressive part is how she deals with what life throws at her. She stands up to her trials with dignity, passion and integrity. You'll be thinking about this movie long after you watch it.

I am Native and so I understand the terrible plyght of my people in the prison system. But I have to say this was the worst portrayal of the people I have ever seen. There was no plot, the scenes jump randomly from one thing to another not making any sense whatsoever. The acting was terrible worse than any elementary school play. There's no way I can recommend this to anyone.

Interesting for the subtext of the portrayal of Native American culture in a women's prison setting, but a bit cloudy on how time has passed for the main character in prison. Presumably Johnny is sent up at around age 14 to an adult women's prison where she seems to immediately become 21 and fit into the prison population, finding a lover and acquiring a prison family. Knowing she's about to be released, she still gets into a fight with a guard and tries suicide, miraculously still getting released on schedule. She gathers with her dysfunctional family on the outside at the murdered father's grave at the end to reconcile. A bumpy ride but still engaging.

This film is less about a lesbian love romance, and more about depicting a Canadian aboriginal culture. As a Native American, I understood the characters' rituals used for grief, guidance and power. While the film is disjointed (it almost feels like you are watching it backwards), it certainly makes a statement for the lack of structure of a culture absorbed and lost within another.
