Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers (2002)
Member Rating:
This made-for-TV movie from the creators of the television series Babylon 5 follows the adventures of the Rangers, a team of humans and Minbari aliens who have been drilled in combat and martial arts skills as they set out to bring law, order, and justice back to interstellar civilizations torn apart during the Shadow Wars. However, as the Rangers attempt to right the wrongs of their old enemies, new foes emerge, and the philosophically enlightened Rangers also have to make a fit member of their team out of a new recruit with an overabundance of attitude. Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers, which features Dylan Neal, Alex Zahara, and Andreas Katsulas, premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel cable network on January 19, 2002. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie was quite horrible. I really liked the entire Babylon 5 series; some of it was downright amazing. But this.... thing.... it's hard to believe that it was created by the same guy. I don't know who to blame; I don't suppose the script or story was exactly bad, so perhaps JMS gets a partial pass. I guess the director and cast should get the blame. I really wanted to turn it off after just 5 minutes, but I keep watching for another hour or so before I gave up. I still intend to finish it, but I'm not sure why. I was always fascinated by the Rangers/Anla-Shok in Babylon 5, yet in this movie they just rubbed me the wrong way. The added bit to the Ranger's code (about never breaking away from combat) just seemed like cheating to add needless drama at the beginning (which wasn't even dramatic, just stupid). I absolutely HATED the holographic/virtual-reality weapons control system; at least the punching/kicking to fire weapons just struck me as ridiculous.

What a disappointment. I thought the idea of following the Rangers was great, but the storyline was mediocre. If this was a pilot for a new series then I'd have hope, but B5 has been out there for quite a few years. The special effects have come a long way from B5's first year, i'll give 'em that...

The acting was wooden, the plot was formula, the dialogue was pathetically predictable, and it was painful to listen to. I must have hit section skip five or six times. This was horrible.

I love G'Kar - it was such a pleasure to see his character in this movie. The story is fun. Wraps up nicely and is engaging. If you like B5 you will enjoy this. If you haven't seen the series, then you probably won't get as much enjoyment out of this as you would have otherwise.

I really wanted to like this but I had a hard time. Character developement was nonexistent even for a two hour movie. I almost fell out my chair laughing at how horrible the scene was where the weapons officer was blasting the mines out of thier path....it was SOOOOO bad. And what the heck is up with tweaking the idea of an ancient powerful evil force returning to conquer the universe....we so did that already.

I could not finish the movie. Poor acting, poor sets, and low budget special effects. It was not what I expected.

Seriously. It was horrible. If you want a babylon 5 movie that is actually GOOD, then rent "In the Beginning". Thats the only B5 movie that, with a little tweaking on the story plot, COULD have made it to the theaters.
