The best-selling novel by J.K. Rowling (titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in England, as was this film adaptation) becomes this hotly anticipated fantasy adventure from Chris Columbus, the winner of a high-stakes search for a director to bring the first in a hoped-for franchise of Potter films to the screen by Warner Bros. Upon his 11th birthday, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), who lives in misery with an aunt and uncle that don't want him, learns from a giant named Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) that he is the orphaned son of powerful wizards. Harry is offered a place at prestigious Hogwarts, a boarding school for wizards that exists in a realm of magic and fantasy outside the dreary existence of normal humans or "Muggles." At Hogwarts, Harry quickly makes new friends and begins piecing together the mystery of his parents' deaths, which appear not to have been accidental after all. The film features alternate-version scenes for every mention of the titular rock. Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, John Cleese, and Fiona Shaw co-star. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

This is a great movie. I have liked it since the first time it came out and have watched it many times since then. It is a great kids movie as well, my kids love it. Such a great picture with great scenery, great acting, and a great story. If you have not gotten the chance to see this or are protesting the Harry Potter movies just because, then I recommend you going out and getting all 5 of them right now and watch them. You won't be disappointed.

I just watched this again with my 9 year old and I was able to enjoy it like the first time again. These Harry Potter movies are so well done you can't go wrong spending a cold weekend in front of the tube watching Potter movies with your kid :D and great snacks to munch on.

I love Harry Potter, so I figured I'd see all the movies. The movie was fairly good. The effects were good and for the most part seamlessly fit with the actors. The acting was for the most part fairly good, although there are some moments with some very wooden acting, even on the part of the adults. I was rather disappointed that it deviated several times from the books, even on one significant plot point. I only cringed for a few moments, though. Overall, a good film. I would watch it again.
