Jack Black continues his march to stardom with this typical Farrelly brothers blend of broad comedy and a heartfelt message. Black is Hal Larsen, a shallow man rapidly approaching middle age whose superficiality can be attributed to his father's deathbed admonition to only date young, beautiful women. Hal and his best friend, Mauricio (Jason Alexander), have taken the advice to heart, but Hal finds all of his physically impressive girlfriends consistently lacking in other qualities that would make them ideal mates. When he bumps into self-help guru Tony Robbins (playing himself), the motivational entrepreneur is intrigued by Hal's predicament and hypnotizes him so that he'll only see the inner beauty of women. Hal is quickly smitten with Rosemary Shanahan (Gwyneth Paltrow), a blonde Peace Corps volunteer who's tenderhearted, funny, and intelligent. She is also gorgeous and meets Hal's basic criteria of outer perfection, but what he doesn't realize is that Robbins' spell is working and he cannot see that Rosemary actually weights 300 pounds. When Mauricio is finally able to snap Hal out of his charmed state, Hal's in love with the inwardly perfect woman and must overcome his obsession with beauty. The script for Shallow Hal (2001) was developed when Peter Farrelly enjoyed the humorous letters written to a mutual friend by Sean Moynihan, a computer software executive who followed the filmmaker's advice to take up screenwriting. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Although some may be put off by just HOW SHALLOW this guy is, by some tacky remarks about women with thick ankles, and some occasionally crude language -- I found the film to be delightful, refreshing, funny and very meaningful. There's even a cameo appearance by the great motivator Tony Robbins. It DOES explore our social prejudices against the overweight. You have to accept that this is a comedy, and let the science fiction aspect stretch your imagination a bit -- but the movie is extremely well done. It is not only worth watching -- it's definitely worth purchasing!

I was actually surprised at how much I liked this movie. I thought it was going to be a dumb, crude humor, cheap laughs type of film. While it did have it's share of low-brow humor, it also had a lot of heart and sensitivity, with a very meaningful story line and a great feel-good ending. Jack Black, as usual, gives an entertaining performance as well.

This movie should be a message for all not to judge a book by its cover. As the movie clearly indicates, some of the most beautiful people in the world are really the ugliest you could ever meet. True love and attraction come from the core of a person, not the cosmetic shell they wear. The movie is comical as well as a real message all can learn from.

It was a pretty insightful and heartfelt movie, that was funny in the beginning and then turned sentimental and kind of sorrowful in the end. There is always negative stereotypes of larger people in this world. Again, beauty is within the person and outer beauty is a plus.

I was surprised at this one. It's actually pretty good. Not as predictable as I would have thought. There were a few scenes it could do without, but, overall a good movie. I've watched it a few times.

Although I originally rented this movie to see a young and gorgeous Gwyneth Paltrow, and she was!...(call me Shallow Bob), and expecting some mindless crase humor, I was quite pleasantly surprised with the actual story line and message this movie conveyed. Wouldn't it be nice if we all saw people for what they are on the "inside", and not judge them by their superficial beauty (or lack-of-superficial-beauty). Being a heavy person, I have experienced some very cruel comments and behavior by others, so this movie really hit home. If you are one of the "beautiful people" and only go out with hotties, and snub your nose at the "uncool fat ugly losers", then this movie is not for you, although you are exactly the ones who should be watching this film and paying attention to what it is saying! Otherwise, this movie hides a very important message behind some sad-but-true buffoonery.

it makes you laugh and realize how shallow we all are--if only we could see other people for their goodness inside rather than their attractiveness on the outside...they should have had a real heavy girl play the main character's part to be consistent with the other women in the movie--but hey...laugh and enjoy yourself!

The plot of this movie sounded great to me. It came through in teaching a very valuable lesson about inward beauty, but it also was somewhat of a disappointment. The movie had the potential of being a good family movie, but as often happens, there were uneccessary scenes and situations that detracted from the wholesome message. This movie could have become a classic, but as it is, I will not be purchasing it. Maybe someone will redo it with more taste and tact in the future.
