This three-hour miniseries adapts Marion Zimmer Bradley's feminist recasting of the Arthurian mythos into a big-budget cable television event. In ancient England, Christianity is spreading and the Saxons are invading. It's up to Viviane (Anjelica Huston) -- Lady of the Lake and high priestess of the kingdom's ancient pagan religion -- to make sure that the next king will honor both the old and new faiths and thereby banish the barbarian hordes. Viviane manipulates her sister Igraine (Caroline Goodall) into marrying King Uther Pendragon (Mark Lewis Jones) and bearing a son, Arthur (Edward Atterton) -- much to the consternation of Viviane's other sister, the power-hungry Morgause (Joan Allen). Arthur grows up happily with his older half-sister, Morgaine (Julianna Margulies), until Merlin (Michael Byrne) spirits him off for training and Viviane brings Morgaine to the mystical island of Avalon to develop her magical connection to the Goddess. Years later, the siblings reunite in a masked mating ritual, unaware that their union is incestuous -- or that their son, Mordred (Hans Matheson), will fall into Morgause's clutches and destroy the delicate balance that Viviane has sought to maintain. As Arthur gathers the knights of the round table and ushers in a golden age with Queen Gwenhwyfar (Samantha Mathis) at his side, the seeds of his destruction, and Avalon's, have already been planted -- by Arthur himself. Filmed on-location in Prague, The Mists of Avalon premiered on the TNT cable network July 15 and 16, 2001. Director Uli Edel, best known for his feature adaptation of Last Exit to Brooklyn, had previously helmed Purgatory for TNT. The titular mists -- developed by Edel and executive producer Mark Wolper -- utilized custom fluid dynamic software designed specifically for the project. Celtic musician Loreena McKennitt added her theme music to composer Lee Holdridge's score. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

After so many renditions of King Arthur and The Round Table, we really enjoyed this one. Even though it did not follow the book completely, what movie ever does? At least the ending was complete and left nothing to the viewer's imagination as to what happened to the characters. After all, is not the story actually a myth? LOL But what a myth...

First off, NEVER compare a film to the book. They are 2 differant entities entirely. That being said, this film really drew me in. This was great story and i enjoyed it much more then many King Arthur type movies.

I would describe it as something with a twist, new insight concerning the story. A remake of something old. It was a good movie cause there always a message within a good movie that pertains to real life.

Making a movie slightly different from the book is artistic freedom, but this movie is a slap in the face of all who have read Marion Zimmer Bradley's wonderful book. It did not express the intense and complicated relationships and desires described in the book at all. There are many important things that were just left out and the actors had no chance really. Don't watch it if you love the book, you will feel like crying...

I'm confused about which book this was based on. I've read the Mists of Avalon by Zimmer-Bradley, but this bore only superficial resemblance. This story was completely gutted and bereft of its mystical power. If I hadn't read the book before seeing it, I would have found it to be mildly entertaining pulp fantasy.

It was an engrossing movie. It did not, however, follow the book and I found that to be a disappointment.

Probably one of the best reinterpertations of the camelot story I seen yet. A great watch.

I didn't realize that this was actually based on a book until after I had watched. Honestly, I enjoyed the film's version of the Arthur legend, especially from the female vantage point. It was definately a different take on it and I enjoyed seeing it!

This film, while being a fun sort of popcorn experience, is so far from Marion Zimmer Bradley's book that I am surprised it was legally allowed to use the book's title. Events are completely changed, events are added, removed, switched around. Characters are deleted, have their lives shortened or extended (a lot). The entire ending is a complete fabrication, and does not even resemble the book. Perhaps worst of all, the power of the women in the book has been diminished beyond recognition. Angelica Huston, Julianna Margulies, and Joan Allen had the talent, unfortunately their skills were negated by the writer's sexist adaptation and shallow, stupid direction. The best thing I can say about this film is that it motivated me to read the book - and I suggest doing the same to all of you reading this.
