Member Rating:
A woman is placed in a dangerous position after a chance meeting with a stranger in this suspense drama. A drifter wanders into a quiet diner off a highway, and the woman who manages the place takes pity on him and gives him breakfast on the house since he doesn't have any money. The stranger looks like he's been injured recently, and when three men come in for something to eat, he warns the manager that the new customers are not to be trusted -- he has information that they want, and they would be willing to hurt her as badly as they hurt him in order to get it. Whom should she believe? And what will happen if the drifter happens to be right? Produced under the title Shearer's Breakfast, When Strangers Appear stars Barry Watson, Radha Mitchell, and Josh Lucas; though set in the United States, the film was actually shot in New Zealand. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie is a great phscological thriller that keeps you on edge throughout. Our story begins with Beth (Mithcell), the owner of a quiet highway side diner. She just gets everything set up when a young stranger (watson) enters, injured and appearing to be scared out of his mind. He claims that thier are three surfers chasing him, and that they were the ones that hurt him. But when the three show up, they seem very far from that. The man (Lucas) beth speaks to is very calm and extremly charming. It doesn't seem that he could be dangerous!! Packed with action and suspense, this is a must see movie!!!

A well acted movie with enough twist and turns in it to make any Alfred H. or M Night Shyamalan fan happy. Worthy of your A list of movies. Leaves you in the end wondering if they meant to make a sequel to it or what was so important for all that mayhem? Also kind of leaves you with a why me chuckle in the end.

This was ok, would've rated higher if they let you know what all the fuss was about the disc and who the heck were the people in the first place, but for the film the acting was good, no story what so ever but was a good suspense thriller.....Enjoy.

Caught it on tv and story was suspenseful enough to keep me glued for the rest of the movie. Mostly Josh Lucas did great as well as the girl. There were some nice tension and action moments. However the storyline and characterization feel a bit thin. The subplot with the cop and his wife was distracting and kept breaking the flow of the movie. Movie would have been better if the script focussed on the surfers vs drifter story. Not too bad for a tv movie but could use better editing.

If it's suspense you are looking for...this is your movie. The suspense comes from the lack of a story line, it leaves you hanging throughout the movie. In fact the best line is when Josh Lucas says "want to know what's on here? Nothing"

this supposed to be a suspense movie but it was interrupted by the viewer asking: why he did that? why she did that? but they kept doing things normal people would not do and that is never good for a movie, on top of that the "town" consisted of one doctor, one deputy one garage attendant and the girl that took care of the dinner that no one visited, except the criminals.

I really enjoyed this movie, although personally I was never confused as to who was telling the truth. This is a good thriller that's definitely worth the watch. The acting was very good and there are some great suspenseful scenes.

I did not watch the movie all the way through. It wasn't enough to hold my attention.

Great movie. Gosh those were the Ford Mustangs everyone wants to forget. Ugh. The Dodge Coronet vintage police car was cool however. Good twists and good acting. I recommend.
