Following up on her controversial erotic drama Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Mira Nair directs this charming family drama about a very chaotic Indian wedding. Lalit Verma (Naseeruddin Shah) is a wealthy father who is trying to see that his daughter Aditi's wedding goes off without a hitch. Though familiar with Western ways, he has little patience with them and is dead set on seeing the nuptials done properly and traditionally. Disillusioned with her long time relationship with Vikram -- a man who is almost twice her age -- Aditi (Vasundhara Das) suddenly agrees to submit to an arranged marriage with Hemant, an engineer from Houston. Yet as the ceremony nears, she gets cold feet and returns to see her former lover -- even though it could spell disaster for everyone involved. Meanwhile, Aditi's comely 17-year-old cousin Ayesha is coming to terms with her blossoming sexuality and has her sights set on Rahul, another relative who is a college student in Australia. Then there is Rai -- also Aditi's cousin -- who has a shocking revelation to make. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto and Venice Film Festivals. At Venice, Monsoon Wedding won the prestigious Golden Lion award. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Funny, Romantic, and Beautiful. Realistic or not, the film, set in India, not only tells the stories of those in romantic relationships but also deals with heavy issues. Honesty, trust, love (familial and romantic), honor...all are subjects in this film. The music is beautiful, the lines are funny, and the stories are romantic (in more ways than one). Rent it!

I loved Monsoon Wedding! The movie shows the power of true love, faith, and forgiveness! Plus I enjoyed seeing the beautiful colors and colorful clothing of India, amazing!

For we sometimes provincial Americans, this is an amazing and enlightening look at modern-day, upper-middle-class India. A terrific and talented cast delivering nuanced performances in a film that is about MUCH more than it appears at its outset. I won't give away the plot, but believe me, there is a LOT going on this movie and I think it is safe to say you will find it to rank among the best of foreign (or American) films.

THIS IS A MUST SEE FILM. IT IS VERY TASTEFUL AND GIVES YOU INSIGHT INTO ARRANGED MARRIAGES INDIAN STYLE. I LOVED IT AND WILL PURCHASE IT.

This is a foreign-made (India) film that is surprisingly good with an interesting plot and good acting. The writing is good (but not great) and touches on some serious issues although the basic premise is light hearted.

It was a little difficult to watch, partly due to the accents. To some extent it was educational.

Not as good as I thought it was going to be. If you are interested - then watch...but if you're not - don't bother

I didn't finish this movie. I couldn't follow it with the sub titles. I don't know if it ever went into English. I didn't have the patience for this. I tried twice.

I realize the culture of India is different then American, but this was total chaos! You may have to watch it twice, but I didn't!
