Kevin Kline stars as George, a down-on-his-luck architect in this tearjerker from Irwin Winkler (At First Sight, Guilty By Suspicion). A disdainful local character who draws disapproval from the community, particularly his neighbor played by Mary Steenburgen, George sets out to change his life after suddenly losing his longtime job and discovering he's terminally ill (he has cancer). Attempting to reconnect with his estranged and troubled son, Sam (Hayden Christiansen), George endeavors to spend the summer they have together building his dream home by the sea. The laborious process leads to the rebuilding of dissipated relationships, the birth of new ones, and all-around healing. ~ Rachel Deahl, Rovi

Easily the best movie I have ever seen, even the video buffs at the BB store said it was the best movie of the year. I own the movie and watch it regularly and cry every time. Must see!!!

I just watched this movie, and this one truly is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. I cried like 3 times throughout the movie...also Mark Isham did an amazing job for the music.

We really enjoyed this film. Not for young children, but entertaining to adults. Makes you think about life and appreciate each day you have with your health.

This movie really gets deep into family struggles, and how each member of the family's independant issues affect the entire family. I was really glad to see the restoration between George, Sam, and Robin. Outstanding acting - this movie family was very real. A real tear jerker.

This movie was incredible. I fell for each of the characters for each of their own unique quirks. I love Hayden's character, he played the young troubled adolescent so well. The movie just kept getting better as i went on. I highly reccommend you give this movie a change - you won't be sorry. Everyone can relate to it somehow

Yes, I rented this one for superficial reasons (to watch Hayden Christensen), but I ended up loving this film and eventually adding it to my video collection... I'm also a fan of Kevin Kline who turned in an amazing performance as an architect who finds out he is terminally ill and decides to spend his last summer building a home with his troubled son played by Christensen. I am not typically into these types of dramas, but there was just something amazing about this film that was powerful enough to draw me in. Hayden Christensen was great as the troubled son Sam... I underestimated him as an actor before seeing this movie... I had a bit more respect for his talent after seeing this one... He was moving... Other performances that rounded out the overall feel of the film were turned in by Kristen Scott Thomas and Mary Steenburgen who provided some funny moments in the film... If you love tear-jerking dramas, I would say this one is for you!

I really enjoyed this movie. If you have ever taken your life or the people who surround you for granted, this movie is for you. I have watched at least 10 movies rated at 4 stars lately, and this was the only one that I feel actually deserved 4+ stars. There are some funny scenes and some sad scenes. Overall, this is a great story of life.

Not sure why I didn't give it 5 stars, this movie was great. Kevin Kline was superb- I'm sharing movies I've seen with a friend, and what a departure for him after watching A Fish Called Wanda. A movie about developing character, growth, relationships.
