Loosely based on a short story by Stephen King, The Lawnmower Man was the first film to explore virtual reality technology and boasts a dazzling collection of computer-animated sequences. The story concerns the slightly-mad scientist Dr. Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan), who as part of a secret government agency called Cybertech has been experimenting with something termed "intelligence enhancement." By using drugs and virtual reality technology, Angelo has managed to boost the IQ of experimental chimps. But he also makes them more aggressive and, bit by bit, they go insane. When one of his animal subjects goes on a rampage, Angelo decides to go for a human guinea pig instead -- Jobe Smith (Jeff Fahey), a slightly retarded man who cuts his lawn. Not only do Jobe's intelligence and sex-drive improve thanks to Angelo's regimen, but he also develops extrasensory perception. As Jobe's mental and emotional state keeps increasing, so does his strength. As he gains more power, Jobe becomes angrier and more vindictive until he vows to get even with all the town's people that patronized him and treated him badly. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Only the complete, uncut version works. If you have the choppy one, take the time to look at all the deleted scenes, which really shouldn't have been deleted. Yes, the special effects are dated, but were pretty good for back then. Other than some corny spots, the overall story was interesting and the film was different.

Solid Remastering on both video and audio. Computer graphics are suprisingly contemporary-looking for twenty year film. Brosnan and Fahey really have never been better.

This reminds me when i used to go over Grandma's house with my cousins and watch 3 or 4 movies back to back! Fun times.... this is one that stood out in my mind from childhood... good then and still good now, for that time the effects were pretty darn good... ;)

The synjopsis starts with a whopper mistake: Tron was the first movie to explore virtual reality, 10 years before this baby! Nevertheless, Lawnmower Man takes the concept further, with virtual reality affecting more than just the (anti-)hero, and the Frankenstein moral played out yet again (take a deficient-- or dead-- body/mind, make a superhuman out of it, and watch it wreak havoc beyond one's control). Regardless, it is well acted and entertaining.

This is like if B-Rated Steven King made Tron. A dr experimenting in virtual reality for education takes a local simpleton (Lawnmower Man), and uses his virtual reality to make him smarter. Soon things go wrong when the evil coorporation steps up the simpleton's training for evil military purposes. The simpleton then gains psychic powers and reigns terror over everyone that picked on him. The 3D special effects were something to behold back in 1992, but don't stand up today. See it only if you want a time capsil for 1992.

I saw this movie years ago and loved it for its time. A bit dated now, but still a good watch.

I saw this when it came out 18 years ago and wanted to watch it again with my wife. I would say this is the best acting Pierce Brosnan ever did. Jeff Fahey does a remarkable job and the supporting cast fits in well. The story has enough depth to keep you going and the special effects are amazing. As another review mentioned, I was surprised the computer effects still look so good after all these years. I didn't even realize this was a Stephen King until today, but I do think it had his feel for light horror and intensity. I would definitely recommend this film.

this is a poor attempt at a prediction for the future, with a bit of a "carrie" feel to it. the story line is weak with tones of fantasy/sci-fi and supernatural elements. uh, pick ONE. this story tries to do too much in one hit. it concerns a relatively abused mentally disabled adult turned super-genious by virtual reality... uh, fail. the characters transition is worthwhile, and Brosnan goes deep with his role, plus. a second look 18 years later shows how far CGI has come, but it gets the point across well. This had absolutely ZERO suspense/thriller that is indicitive of King's stories. 2 stars. rent it if you're bored, need a little relief from reality by laughing at their storyline and enjoyable yet dated effects.

This movie drags on and on. No action and nothing seems to happen until an hour into it. And then what a dissapointment. The only reason it got half a star was for the idea behind the movie and the story line. Trust me, don't waste your time.
