The Fast and the Furious (2001) screenwriter David Ayer follows up that fast-paced action hit with this gritty cop drama from director Antoine Fuqua. Ethan Hawke stars as Jake Hoyt, a fresh-faced Los Angeles Police Department rookie anxious to join the elite narcotics squad headed up by 13-year veteran Detective Sergeant Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). Harris has agreed to give Hoyt a shot at joining his team with a one-day ride-along during which Hoyt must prove his mettle. As the day wears on, however, it becomes increasingly clear to the greenhorn that his experienced mentor has blurred the line between right and wrong to an alarming degree, enforcing his own morally compromised code of ethics and street justice. As he struggles with his conscience, an increasingly alarmed Hoyt begins to suspect that he's not really being given an audition at all; he's being set up as the fall guy in an elaborate scheme. Lots of action and a terrific performance by Denzel Washington. The character he portrays in this movie is the opposite of what I usually thought of when I see his movies. A different role for him in this movie and he pulled through with flying colors. This movie takes a you deep inside the criminal world and a look at the action of one detective assigned to enforce it. Very powerful and an engrossing movie.

I thought I had seen everything from Denzel Washington until I saw this movie. Probably one of the great all time performances... no matter what you've heard--the story, the acting and the directing are all extremely underrated. A Scorsesean effort from Antoine Fuqua, and I dare say that if Martin himself had directed this film, it would have been nominated for eight Oscars. Its that good. Three and a half stars, maybe four.

The movie took a few unexpected turns that allowed the movie to be good - but not great. I was expecting more out of the movie. I thought Denzel Washington held his end of the bargain, but I thought Hawke was very uneven and not very good. Neat concept and not bad overall, but not awesome.

A lot of action, "if that is all you want". I would say on a scale of 1 to 10 in being anywhere near to being the truth in todays world it would be a "1". "A action film completly fiction to please the imagination and poison the minds of people into thinking that this is what its all about".

I lost interest in this movie within 10 minutes. Story didn't make much sense, unnecessary language. I love Denzel, but hated this movie.

Denzel Washington should of passed Training Day up, it is totaly the wrong film for him. Denzel Washington is worst than the crooks that he should be putting away. The rookie did a much better job, than he could ever do.
