The friendship of two men is tested by war, political upheaval, and romantic rivalry in this drama from Czech filmmaker Jan Sverak, whose Kolya became an international success. Lt. Franta Slama (Ondrej Vetchy) is a top pilot in the Czech Air Force who is assigned to train a promising young flier, Karel Vojtisek (Krystof Hadek). Franta and Karel both share a great enthusiasm for the thrill of blazing across the sky, and they become fast friends; however, when Nazi Germany invades Czechoslovakia, Franta and Karel chafe under the authority of their new leaders, and they escape to England, where they join other Czech exiles in the R.A.F. While flying a mission over England, Karel crash lands and happens upon the farmhouse of Susan (Tara Fitzgerald), a young woman whose husband is in the Navy. Karel soon falls head over heels for Susan, but while they enjoy a brief fling, in time Susan decides she prefers the company of the older and more worldly Franta. As Franta and Karel struggle to maintain their friendship despite their romantic rivalry, the war finally comes to a close, and the Czechs return home. Trmavomodry Svet, released in English-speaking territories as Dark Blue World, also features Anna Massey and Charles Dance. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

At first I thought this movie was going to be a drag because of the sub titles. After about the first 15 minutes the movie dragged me in and I did not eevn notice I was reading subtitles. If you like WW2 movies like saving private ryan or band of brothers than this is a must see.

Moving and well realized movie! Good acting, good effects, good music, great human drama! I'm not the kind to like dramatic movies, but this one moved me to tears. I highly recommend it. If you don't mind the Czech-speaking actors, and the English subtitles, you'll be deeply involved in the many threads this movie makes flow throughout its fabric. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

It probably requires some knowledge of the events leading up to WWII to fully appreciate the motivations of the main characters, but if you stick with what may be confusing at first, this film is very rewarding. The love triangle is very believable, as are the pilots' alternating displays of courage and fear. And the ending will truly move you. Recommended for serious film buffs.

I enjoyed this movie tremendously! I must confess that I didn’t expect a foreign movie to have the same high standards of Hollywood’s main-stream productions. With plenty top notch action, some of the best dog fight scenes I ever seen. The action scenes don’t need a dissertation. What pleased most was the well developed human drama story, for that, I don’t have enough good words to describe it. I have to make all the words from Miguel V. mine. Matter fact all the praises given are well deserved. Very important also and, praises should be given to this movie’s writers and director for telling us about the whole history; how heroes of WWII came bake home to be tortured and disposed of by a totalitarian regime. Just a great movie you must see.

I loved this movie! Very well done and a wonderful snapshot of Checz history and what happened to the real heroes. The Communists didn't trust them so imprisoned! I wish everybody would learn this very important history! barb

I thought this movie was terrific, wonderful, romantic, tragic and very moving. It shows how you can be on the losing side even when your side wins , a bit like the movie "Other People's Lives" . After 5 minutes you won't even notice you are reading subtitles.

I enjoyed the movie very much. Give yourself time to get through the subtitles and you will live the awesome dogfights along with the pilots and get caught up with the real life drama as it unfolds. Excellent camera work on and off the ground. A real treat. Not meant to be a Private Ryan in my opinion, but a real glimpse into what went on with the Checz pilots. Give it a chance, you'll like it too.

Cheesy in some ways but it advances a good story. Great flying sequences. Some of the transitions could have been better handled , but well worth watching.

I was taken by the flying footage. Not an overly complex work, but very well done. An airman's Das Bot.

Beautiful photography but cliche scenes which you've seen before. Nothing like Private Ryan.
