Marcello's relationship with Steiner is enjoyable, and it looks like it may even redeem Marcello early in the film. Then they have a conversation on writing and family and friends - all things you want Marcello to choose for himself - that seems to forshadow the things to come. After that the film just rambles. Read More Having been raised in Italy, I always felt the need to watch this movie at some point in my life as I had always heard about it. Well, I didnt love it as I had expected to. I love old movies and this one didnt really leave a lasting impression on me. The movie was too long and it got very boring at times. Mastroiannis character was incapable of being happy in his own world and perhaps, felt the need to find happiness in a world of all the movie stars that he wrote about. Read More La Dolce Vita is truly a masterpiece. The acting and script are very good, but the composition of many of the shots reminds one of some of the great works by Kubrick (or even Eisenstein), but with an Italian flair. It brought me back a bit to my early 70's college days, when I routinely enjoyed the films of Fellini and Truffault and Bergman, etc. It was a "sweet" treat! Read More I believe that 1/3 of this 3-hour-long film could easily have been left on the cutting room floor. Ultimately, the extra scenes drain "La Dolce Vita" of its vitality and dilute Fellini's message, which is here much the same as in much of his other work: Rome is decadent; life has no meaning; man is unhappy because unfulfilled; lovers can't connect; women are empty-headed and men are swine. At least "La Dolce Vita" skips the hallucinatory images that render other Fellini films so distressing, but the endless party scenes, each featuring behavior worse than the last, are still hard to bear. Marcello Mastroianni is masterful, as usual, as the bored, disdainful womanizer. His performance, along with Anita Ekberg's sexy dance, are this film's main saving graces. Read More I just watched The Bicycle Theif and that was a much better Italian film than this one. I think Fellini's a master in a lot of ways, but his work is not meant for everyone. You kind of have to watch his films more than once to catch his messages, they're pretty well hidden. What makes his films kind of boring is that his characters are just too damn real. Their situations are just too damn real as well. It's kind of like watching home movies. But that's also what makes him great.

I would have giving it no stars but it does make you continue to watch it wondering what people see in this film.
