This Hong Kong action thriller finds a team of top-notch lady thieves springing into action when one of their members' ex-lovers is kidnapped. Cat and Zi-yang were once romantically involved cat burglars. However, since their breakup, Zi-yang has attempted to walk the straight and narrow, while Cat has fallen in with a sexy band of crooks call The Seven Cats. When word arrives that Zi-yang has been taken captive, Cat realizes she still has feelings for him and calls upon her cohorts to help save him. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Well, I rented this film and went into it with high hopes. Unfortunately, I was kind of letdown by the execution of this film. The plot was kind of all over the place, there wasn't much characterization for the female leads and the action scenes were kind of choppy (mainly due to bad camera angles). However, the cast and crew gave it their all and I suppose that does count for something but at the end of the day Martial Angels does leave a bit of a dull taste in your mouth. My grades for this film? A+ for creativity, but a 'C' for execution.

Although a couple notches below in production value (acting, directing, sound, picture), if you liked "So Close", you may like "Martial Angels". This movie contains a lot of gorgeous Asian women, seven in all. You may find yourself constantly rewinding a lot - to check out the characters, not to reread the subtitles. However, there are a few negatives. First, the film transfer for scenes early in the movie look almost bleached out and improves only moderately through the end. Secondly, the sound is output in glorious stereo. This movie could have easily scored 4 stars had the film transfer been better and the sound remastered for Dolby Digital 5.1. Thirdly, except for a trailer, there are no movie related extras. Overall, definitely recommended.
