Based on the 1969 short story Super-Toys Last All Summer Long, by Brian Aldiss, this science fiction fantasy bears similarities to Pinocchio (1940) and originated as a long-gestating project of director Stanley Kubrick that passed to his friend Steven Spielberg after Kubrick's death. Haley Joel Osment stars as David, a "mecha" or robot of the future, when the polar ice caps have melted and submerged many coastal cities, causing worldwide starvation and human dependence upon robotic assistance. The first mecha designed to experience love, David is the "son" of Henry (Sam Robards), an employee of the company that built the boy, and the grief-stricken Monica (Frances O'Connor). David is meant to replace the couple's hopelessly comatose son, but when their natural child recovers, David is abandoned and sets out to become "a real boy" worthy of his mother's affection. Along the way, David is mentored by a pleasure-providing mecha named Gigolo Joe (Jude Law) and a talking "super toy" bear named Teddy. His adventures take him to the Roman Circus-style "Flesh Fair," where mechas are destroyed for the amusement of humans; Rouge City, where Gigolo Joe narrowly avoids capture by police; and finally a submerged New York City, where David's creator, Professor Hobby (William Hurt) reveals the secrets of the boy's creation. Brendan Gleeson and narrator Ben Kingsley co-star in A.I., which was adapted from Kubrick's treatment by Spielberg, in his first crack at screenwriting since Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I must be among the few who think this is one of the best films of this decade. I guess you really have to love the whole concept of intelligent robots in order to "get" this movie, which might explain why it never seemed to catch on with the general public (not to mention that title). That's a shame, because there is so much here to think about and enjoy, aside from an excellent script and beautiful visuals. If and when computers do truly simulate human thought processes, will we see them as a threat? Or can a human even grow to love a machine, and vice versa? And then there is the parent-child relationship, and poor David's almost cruel obsession with being loved by his "mother." Haley Joel Osment's acting here is so poignant, I'm amazed he did not receive any major awards recognition. David IS a real boy because of him.

This is a beautiful story. Parts reminded me of Oliver, The Animatrix, and Pan's Labyrinth, as different as those movies are. Certain scenes are hard to watch, if only because they evoke such strong emotions. Haley Joel Osment is one of the finest child actors I've ever seen; he steals this one.

I wanted to watch this movie, because of all the good reviews. after watching the whole 2 hrs and 25 minutes, I have to say I disagree, I didn't like this movie, is so slow, the first 30 minutes where ok, and then the movie goes nowhere... so for the last 2 hrs I was kind of waiting to go back to the original story.. i didn't like it at all.

Emotionally Moving. The movie is longer than most, but it's such an interesting story that you might not notice.

My second time watching. My friend, who is not a science fiction or fantasy buff, almost quit on it part way through, but in the end was very happy. The boy who played the child robot deserved an Oscar.

This was one of the more imaginative movies I've ever seen. The premise of an android boy programmed to love a mother who eventually rejects him, who, because of his undying love for her, spends the rest of his existence trying to become a real boy so he can win her love was brilliant. HJO's performance was so strong and believable that it will make you cry every time you see it. This is one of Spielberg's best.

Amazing at times, flawed at times (mostly towards the end), but overall a pretty incredible flick.
