The true story of Hasso Herschel inspired this epic Cold War drama from Germany. Harry Melchoir (Heino Ferch) was a respected German athlete when the Berlin Wall forcibly divided the nation in 1961. Unwilling to cooperate with the East German authorities, Melchoir escaped to West Berlin, along with his friends Matthis (Sebastian Koch), Vic (Mehmet Kurtulus), and Fred (Felix Eitner). When he fled to West Germany, Melchoir was forced to leave his family behind, and he fears for the fate of his sister Lotte (Alexandra Maria Lara). Eager to free Lotte from East German rule, Melchoir strikes upon the idea of building a tunnel under the wall that will allow her to leave the country undetected; Melchoir recruits Matthis, Vic, and Fred to help him, along with a resourceful woman named Fritzi (Nicolette Krebitz). It isn't long before Melchoir and his compatriots discover that many others want to help their friends and family escape the East German regime, and the simple tunnel turns into a massive building and engineering project that's both ambitious and fraught with danger for all parties concerned. Der Tunnel was produced as a two-part miniseries for German television; an edited feature-length version was prepared for possible theatrical release outside Europe. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Captivating realism for theatrical telling of a real event in history. Personalities exposed to the light, despite being burried in the dirt and grime of a hand dug tunnel. The telling of a first glimpse at desperate people desperately separated from loved ones and sense of fairness. Moves us from seeing and being victims to being vangaurds of a person's will to survive and unite their family. I can smeel the dirt and mustiness of the tunnel, and the victory of the first escape under the Berlin Wall.

Thoroughly enjoyable, and detailed, story of heroism in the name of freedom. A terrific cast helps to smooth over the "Hollywood" elements which have been mixed into the basic plot. Although shorter than its original run, the length seems just right. See it!

Excellent movie of escape through tunnel from E. Berlin to W. Berlin in 1960s. Very well acted and written. So suspenseful that at moments it's painful to watch. Strongly recommended.

Movie-watchers looking for an old-fashioned but absolutely riveting piece of fictionalized history could do no better than THE TUNNEL. It's two hours and 47 minutes long, but I wager, once you've begun, you'll savor every one of those minutes--particularly the final hour which builds an accumulative suspense that is breathtaking. Director Roland Suso Richter may be no knock-out stylist, but everything he does is in service to the tale at hand. He draws fine performances from his cast, & the "period" look of the film is wonderful. The Tunnel" is old-fashioned in the sense that it offers a great story (escape from East Berlin during and just after the construction of the infamous Berlin Wall) replete with love, death, birth, sacrifice, betrayal, hair-breath escapes & more. ItÂ’s been a long while since I have encountered a film so "big"-- hugely enjoyable, intelligent, moving & righteous. Intimate and epic, this is some kind of monument to mainstream moviemaking and all it has to offer.

A foreign film for people who don't like foreign films (and people who do, too). Nothing artsy-fartsy here -- just straightforward, popular entertainment, expertly done in all departments. If it's "art" you're looking for, rent the brilliant "4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days." But for sheer enjoyment, "The Tunnel" is hard to beat. (Yes, there are subtitles. Be brave -- you can handle it.)

Very interesting, also very long. It was over 3 hrs. Feel it could have been shortened somewhat. Great acting, kept you on the edge of your seat.

Absolutely riveting yet harrowing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time not knowing if their escape was going to be successful or not. It really paints a vivid picture of what the Berlin wall was all about and the human cost. These people gave up everything for freedom, and we Americans easily take our freedoms for granted. The main actress is really talented. Not an easy film to watch because of all the pain and suffering, but there is moments of levity and laughter to balance the suspense. The 'making of' documentary under special features was very interesting too because the filming in a tunnel posed quite a challenge.

The start was very interesting but it became repetitive and unbelievable after the first hour. The last hour and a half really dragged.

Obviously, at 2 3/4 hours, this movie could have used a little editing, but the movie kept its suspense. It's really amazing to see the amount of resources the GDR spent on preventing its citizens from leaving. This movie works as both human drama and in action. Well-acted and directed.
