The gritty underbelly of New York's complex, ethnically divided criminal world is exposed in this dark drama from director Abel Ferrara. Christopher Walken stars as Frank White, a drug lord who's just been released from a long stint in prison. Aware that feeding off of society's depravity has made him a wealthy man, Frank has become determined to give something back to the city, and he hatches a scheme to build a multimillion-dollar public hospital in one of Brooklyn's worst ghetto neighborhoods. Needing the assistance of his fellow criminals to pull it off, Frank and his adjutant Jimmy Jump (Laurence Fishburne) encounter a wall of resistance from every faction, including drug-trade partner Lance Wong (Joey Chin) and temperamental cop Dennis Gilley (David Caruso). Frank's do-gooder efforts ultimately result in a Mob war and in a bloody showdown between the city's various ethnic criminal actions. Ferrara followed King of New York with a similarly themed film that many critics considered his masterpiece, Bad Lieutenant (1992). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
Christopher Walken gives a commanding performance in this crime drama. Other than the Deer Hunter this is one of his best films. With a good supporting cast this is one to rent or buy.
Hadn't seen this movie until now... great crime/drama. Walken has tremendous screen presence in this film. David Caruso also good. Had plenty of violence, action, and bad guys get their due. Can't take your eyes off of Walken whenever he's onscreen. One minor flaw, a few of the sets definetely looked like backlot studio sets(almost a cartoon-like appearance). Otherwise a movie to add to your collection. Always felt that Christopher Walken was one of the most under-rated actors in Hollywood.
Stylistically, this movie is solidly in the 80's. However, the script is poorly written with unidimensional characters sucking up incredible amounts of cocaine. I'm a big Christopher Walken fan, but this has got to be his worst role I've ever seen. He is not a convincing gangster in this movie. I would describe "King of New York" as silliness laced with violence and enough cocaine use to O.D. anyone.
This movie was terrible. The fight scenes looked fake and the characters were ridiculous. Some of the acting was good but the plot was incredulous and the characters were ridiculous.
