King Solomon's Mines (1985)
Member Rating:
The action in this routine adventure film would be modeled on the enormously successful Indiana Jones but it is too much, too fast, too deja vu. It all starts when Jessie Huston (Sharon Stone, before stardom) talks adventurer Allen Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) into helping her find her father, an archaeologist. He has been kidnapped in Africa by a Turk (John Rhys-Davies) and a German colonel (Herbert Lom) who are determined to extract the secret location of King Solomon's mines from the stubborn man. As Jessie and Quatermain head off into the unknown, there are crocodiles, lions, and other human beasts to conquer before the father or the mines hove into view. A sequel was soon to follow. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This is an extremely entertaining piece of fluff, a movie you would catch on TV at noon on a Sunday 20 years ago. There's lots of groan-inducing banter, good adventure-style set pieces, and a pretty fast-moving travelogue plot. While the movie is certainly high adventure, this is grade-D Indiana Jones kitsch; my wife and I, however, found it quite entertaining. Herbert Lom is hilarious as the evil German and John Rhys-Davies as the conniving Turk, not to mention a decent leading duo, Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone. Certainly family-friendly, expect treasure maps, relentless pursuit, cartoon-ish characters, and last minute escapes.

This movie is obviously a low budget answer to the popular Indiana Jones series. The music is almost a dead ringer, and the sub plot of fighint Germany, though in this case WW1. The special effects were obviously rushed and many corners were cut to save money and time. The acting is not top notch or believable, but the movie is entertaining. If you're only interested in spit and polish, this movie is not for you, but there is plenty of action and adventure. And the scenery isn't too bad either. I found myself laughing and enjoying myself as I watch, even if I couldn't help noticing the blunders.

They want their special effects back! This movie had me rolling with laugher because of the unrealistic stunts and special effects. If you like Sharon Stone, this is one not too miss. Her bermudas were daisy dukes by the end of the movie. There's a hungry hippo, a giant spider, lions and crocodiles; Oh and a great plane scene that will have you laughing your head off. Entertaining.
