Alec Guinness gets to die eight times, playing a line of successors to a dukedom, in the Ealing black comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets. Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price) is ninth in line to inherit the dukedom from the aristocratic D'Ascoyne family. Louis vows to kill all eight people who stand between him and the duke's title. Aside from two cases of natural causes, Louis works through the list, eliminating rivals (all played by Guinness). Along the way he romances Sibella (Joan Greenwood), a childhood friend who ends up marrying a dullard, and Edith (Valerie Hobson), the beautiful widow of one of his victims with whom he plans to share his title. One of the driest of comedies, this Ealing Studios "Brit" hit of more than a half-century ago is still a lot of fun--if you enjoy listening to well-written dialog and watching actors who know how to deliver the script. KIND HEARTS & CORONETS boasts Alec Guinness in his famous 8-roles, including one as a woman. It's expected that he's terrific, but so are Joan Greenwood (what a voice!) and Valerie Hobson as the lovely ladies, and even Dennis Price (not overly noted for his acting skills) in the lead. Criterion has given us once again an exemplary DVD transfer, so bask away in the rather refined pleasures to be found here.

One of the great dark comedies of all time. This is an Ealing Studio classic in the same vein as the original "Ladykillers." Not to be missed if you enjoy the old black & white movies as I do. If you are looking for action and explosions, this is not your movie, but if you enjoy pure wit, intelligence and dry humor, this has it in droves.

I had to give this slightly higher than "okay" because it was very interesting seeing Alec Guiness playing 8 parts (including a woman....an uugggggly woman...LOL). It was well done, but slow moving. It was British "dark" humor, at it's best. If you like British and/or "dark" and/or subtle humor, you'll like this movie. If you like Alec Guiness, you will like it.

"Kind hearts are more than coronets, and simple faith than Norman blood." tennyson. a truly funny and wonderful dark comedy. guinness is remarkable in his multiple roles but price holds it all together with his wonderful portrayal of louis mazzini. 1/2 star deduction for the unfortunate racial epithet.

This is an excellent old funny movie with a somewhat unpredictable outcome. Alec Guinness is masterful in the eight roles he plays (including a woman.) Guinness fans will enjoy it, and so will old movie fans and British movie fans.
