The Mummy Returns (2001)
Member Rating:
This big-budget sequel from writer/director Stephen Sommers navigates much of the same cliffhanger territory as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones franchise. It is 1933, eight years after the events of The Mummy (1999). Legionnaire Rick O'Connell Brendan Fraser has married his Egyptologist girlfriend Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and the couple has settled in London, where they're raising their young son Alex (Freddie Boath). The family's domestic tranquility is shattered when the 3,000-year-old mummified corpse of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), which has been shipped to the British Museum, is resurrected once again to resume his evil quest for immortality. In the meantime, another ancient threat emerges in the form of the Scorpion King (professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson, aka. the Rock), a mighty warrior frozen in time with his supernatural army. In order to save his family, Rick is forced to seek a mythical pyramid of gold, facing marauding bands of pygmy skeletons, among other hazards. The Mummy Returns co-stars John Hannah, Oded Fehr, and Patricia Velasquez. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I thought that this was actually better than the first Mummy. It had alot more action, special f/x, and fight scenes. It takes place where the first one left off. And continues the story very well. I classify this as a typical "popcorn" movie. Which requires no thinking, just kick back and enjoy the ride. This movie felt like it was ripping off Indiana Jones at times. If you like a good adventure story with cool cgi effects, I would definately recommend this!!

Action packed entertainment, brings out the explorer in everyone! The sequel to the Mummy brings forth a new member to the family, a young boy. This would make it a great family movie, except for the fact that there are several scenes that could inspire nightmares for younger children. The family goes exploring together and the action begins - and doesn't stop until the end. Excellent movie great special effects, 4 1/2 Stars in my book.

Great movie - excellent sequel. Cute love story - enjoyed the first one more, though.

This movie is so good I wanted to see it again and again. Brendan Fraser is as funny as ever.John Hannah did an awesome job. Stephen Sommers is my favorite director. If you liked the Mummy you'll love this movie.

The Mummy Returns is a pretty good follow up for the first and it is more of the same. The story with the first two mix well and they bring back the same cast of characters which is a huge plus. I felt though as the movie progressed though it kind of fell apart. As soon as the action scenes started it seemed to have that Mummy feel. Again good watch but I wish there was more horror in it. Watch the first two but not the third because that movie is awful.

I liked this movie more than I did the first one. I liked the whole story and some of the extra characters they brought in I liked as well. I really liked the extra back story they brought in with this movie with Anaksunamu and Rachel Weisz's extra character. I liked the story of the Scorpion King as well, it was short and to the point. Enough of what I needed to be interested in watching the Scorpion King. The only part I didn't like was the CGI effect of the Scorpion King. The Rock looked so bad in that CGI version, but the movie films were still strying to perfect CGI during this time. I definitely recommend this movie if you liked the first one.

Worse than the first one!! The only reason people were flocking to see it was because Dwayne the Rock Johnson had a small part in it. The story just went on and on. It was impossible to see the gigolo from Deuce Bigalow play the role of a serious warrior.

...and this is no exception. The key actors lose their youthful litheness (like all of us) and the addition of the scorpion king- the costume, not the concept, pushed it over the edge. I still watch and enjoy it however and it does add a few new characters with panache. Really should be kept as a set.

The first Mummy movie wasn't great, but at least it was entertaining. I can't say that about this one. This sequel was full of some horrendously bad acting, a predicable plot, and characters I didnt care about. Even the action scenes were hardly impressive. And while I'm no fan of The Rock, I expected him to have more than 5 minutes of screen time. For me, the only real positive of this movie was Rachel Weisz.
