The first Japanese anime series created specifically for America's Cartoon Network, The Big O nevertheless made its official debut over Japanese television on October 13, 1999. The series was set in Paradigm City, some forty years after the metropolis was devastated by "the Event," an unspecified catastrophe which also wiped out everyone's memories. The citizenry of this post-apocalyptic society lived under martial law with Roger Smith (aka "The Negotiator") forsworn to look after the best interests of the populace. Helping Roger are his butler, Norman; his android companion, Dorothy; and his robot "bodyguard," the titular Big O. Although Roger was at first loyal to the leaders of Paradigm City, he began to seriously question their right to rule as he delved deeper and deeper into the secrets of the distant past. The Big O made its American premiere as part of the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block on April 2, 2001. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
I have been waiting and waitng for this classic piece of japanimation (along with 'Reboot') to come out at Blockbuster. A year ago it was promised, but don't hold your breath.....
This is an excellent show. Mr. Smith is like Bruce Wayne, but instead of wearing a Cape, he wears a suit and Pilots the Big O. Each episode is like a cohesive part, telling a different story, but providing you the story/subplot which will provide them with the truth. The Robot battle scenes with Big O and his opponents are very cool, as well as the battle theme song. Not exactly a family friendly show, but Highly recommended for everyone who like Robot Mecha & a great story!
While this entire series was completed several years ago, you still can't rent it here.
Why? I don't know, but you can BUY it right now at BlockBuster online. Perhaps they are too cheap or lazy to put a copy in the rental queue...
This is a review of this site with regards to this DVD instead of a review of the DVD itself. Every time I try to add this DVD to the queue it puts the wrong DVD into my queue. Therefore I cannot give this DVD any real rating.... I've talked to customer reps thousands of times, and no one has fixed it. It's been over a year folks, fix your (bleep).
If you like anime and scifi this is a very entertaining series to watch it...
Roger Smith is the series protagonist. As a Negotiator, his job entails finding a resolution for the troubles of the City of Amnesia.
R. Dorothy Wayneright is Roger's assistant. She is later revealed to be a gynoid constructed by him.
Norman Burg is Roger's butler.
Dan Dastan is the middle-aged Chief of the Military Police. Roger describes him as "a hard-nosed cop [who is] completely devoted to the force" and with "more pride in the Military Police than anything else."
Angel is the beautiful woman Roger encounters throughout the series. Angel's true identity is a mystery, her motives questionable and her allegiance to no one but herself.
