Set amidst the controversy of the handover of the Panama Canal from America to Panama in late 1999, this espionage thriller follows seductive British spy Andrew Osnard (Pierce Brosnan), who has found himself recently banished to Panama. When Osnard stumbles into a tailor shop, he meets Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), a garrulous sort with an unmatched penchant for "fluence" -- that is, fabricating wild tales with real-life details. Osnard threatens to expose his shady past, until Pendel agrees to provide him with information about the political situation in Panama. Pendel's wife Louisa (Jamie Lee Curtis) tries to remain unscathed by her husband's constant follies, which escalate and put him in the midst of international discord, while also threatening the shaky relationship between himself and Osnard, who cannot escape each other's grasp. Based on John le Carré's popular 1996 novel, the film also features Catherine McCormack, David Hayman, and young Daniel Radcliffe, who completed this film before his starring role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, released later in the year. ~ Jason Clark, Rovi

... just don't. There are no good reasons to see this movie and plenty of good reasons not to. For starters, you won't waste that much of your precious time on earth. For seconds, you may never see Geoffrey Rush or any of the other actors in the same light again. Of all the acting Geoffrey's was the only reason to give this film a star at all and I should think that Pierce wished he'd never set out on a mission that seems to be designed to cast him in a non-Bond character but instead puts him up as wooden, shallow and utterly devoid of talent. In fact, so bad as so many of the performances in this movie that one can't help but drift to the notion that it might have been appaulingly directed. It is, I suppose, vaguely possible that the film was intended to have a slap-stick element but the over done makeup and ghostly apparitions jar viciously with the rambling script and discontinuous screen play.

There's an added layer of irony to watching this now because this is the same kind of snow job that got the US into Iraq. Sometimes the film leans a little too far into parody, like Dylan Baker's general who seemed straight off the set of a "Dr. Strangelove" remake, but it's still very entertaining.

The above reviews are mostly bad and I do not agree. I just got back from Panama and I enjoyed the lush scenic shots of Panama and on-location shots of Panama City and the Panama Canal. Pierce Brosnan plays a bad guy which is nice to see compared to his usual image. The plot is interesting and relevant to the conduct of foreign policy even today. The characters are interesting. It is just the right length, slightly under two hours. It gives you plenty of action and something to think about after.

I really like this film (own it in fact). I also read and love most John Le Carré's books but never expect any book->movies to come close. They never do and one is always disappointed if expecting accuracy and fullness of detail and ambiance etc. Some movies don't even keep the story line, but I can still enjoy them. This is an enjoyable spy genre film, great actors; Geoffrey Rush as always adds a quirkiness I find irresistible. I found it entertaining, but I come with an open mind and modest, reasonable expectations. If you are a critical viewer or hung up on comparisons or high-end productions, perhaps the other reviews will lean more to your bias.

A Boorman bomb. Bad direction is the only way to screw up a movie this great cast

Poor attempt at a mystery/thriller type movie. I was embarrassed for the actors. That is, before I fell asleep. Pass on this one!

This movie was so boring, i can't believe this movie was so whack, storyline is boring, 007 is boring. The only good part of this movie is Jamie Lee Curtis Breast, she really doesn't show them, but more like P.Brosnan gropes her so hard her breast falls out of her dress. Skip this movie, or if you do rent this just skip to the gropping part with JLC.

I saw this and have regretted it ever since. There is no plot no story, just like the other reviewers said no redeemable feature! Do not waste your time . I have not read the book, but those who have sp should not watch it as movies are always worse than the book and this movie sucks BIG TIME, DO NOT WATCH IT.

Lousy movie. My sister and I took it back to the video store and got our money back. The only good part of this movie was the opening scene of the tailor cutting out the suit. Turn it off after that.

The only thing worth seeing in this movie is Jamie Lee Curtis' nude scene. The rest is just plain tepid, pointless, and most of all, BORING.
