Just One of the Guys (1985)
Member Rating:
In this uneven teen comedy, an aspiring female high-school journalist assumes a fake male identity after her essay on just that subject -- a woman posing as a male jock -- is rejected in a contest. Miffed by what she assumes is a bias against her gender in the rejection of her essay, Terry (Joyce Hyser) dons the right garb, gets a new haircut, drops her voice down to a suitable male-sounding register and passes herself off as a guy (okay, not believably, but one is willing to go along with the conceit to see what happens). As she soon discovers, moments in the locker room and at phys ed classes can be harrowing, but worse yet, she becomes seriously enamored of Rick (Clayton Rohner) a quiet, good-looking guy who does not run with either the macho or preppie pack. How can she broach the subject of her real identity? Terry's friends have their own romantic interests, all of which are resolved at the high school prom. It just had to be -- this film was followed by one titled Just One of the Girls with another director, and a male cross-dresser as the featured protagonist. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I had completely forgotten about this gem of a movie from 1985 until just recently. I must say that I enjoyed re-watching this film so much! As you watch it, it will spark wonderful memories. As every actor is introduced, you will think, "Oh, I remember that person! H/She was in a lot of 80s movies." The clothes, the sets, the cars, the music...it is all totally 80s and you will love every moment of it!

This was great. Great teen movie from the 80's, didn't seem to miss a notch. Highly recommend to 80's teens to re watch or to the new teens. This movie stayed in my mind for some reason as one of the teen greats, but not overboard.

In the vast pantheon of 80's movies, this truly is a forgotten gem. While the leading lady could never possibly be mistaken for a guy in the real world (check the scene at the prom when she reveals she's a girl....wow!), with a bit of suspended belief, her impersonation of a guy is spot-on, with a touch of over the top cheekiness thrown in. The script is clever and funny, and never gets too maudlin. Sometimes it's fun to have a movie you can sit back and enjoy without having to make an emotional or intellectual commitment, and that's this film to a tee!

I always loved this movie. With the sex crazed younger brother, to all the "teenagers" that really look like they are at least 25 or older. hehe classic! This movie always seems to get over-looked by all the john hughes movies, which is quite a shame id say. this easily ranks right up there in my opinion

Though I was 3-yrs.-old when this came out, this is an awesome movie. It still amazes me how Joyce Hyser could look so much like a boy and so much like a girl. This will always be one of my favorite 80's movies.

I first saw this movie shortly when it was released on video back in the 80's. My family and I enjoyed it so much that even to this day we still find it as funny as the first time we ever watched it. Joyce Hyser was perfect for this role as an undercover female student writer who is trying to make a point about discrimination but the one that took the cake was Billy J. who played her brother Buddy. The entire cast did a good job and the movie is a classic compared to some of the junk that's made today. I recommend this movie to anyone but do advise parental discretion because of some adult language, adult content, and brief nudity.

This movie should be rated R. There are many scenes in the brother's bedroom where the walls are covered with Playboy Pin ups. Their full nudity can be clearly seen. Also the sister opens her top to show she is really a girl. You think you will just see it from behind, but the full frontal view is shown! The Amanda Bynes movie "She's the Man," is better and funnier with much less crude talk and no nudity.
