My First Mister (2001)
Member Rating:
A first feature from acclaimed actress Christine Lahti (who won an Academy Award for her short film Lieberman in Love in 1995), My First Mister explores the delicate relationship between two unlikely individuals who bring each other out of their protective shells. Jennifer (Leelee Sobieski), the film's narrator, is a Goth-obsessed, tattooed 17-year old who absorbs herself in death-laden music and poetry. Just graduating from school and immersed in a dysfunctional relationship with her out-there mother (Carol Kane), she finds a job at a local clothing store as a clerk. Her boss, Randall Harris (Albert Brooks), is a rigid, middle-aged type, who becomes uncomfortable when Jennifer begins to spy on him and follow his moves. She then cleans up her act a bit and lands a position as a stockperson, and Randall begins to take an interest in her. After a few outings where they attempt to relate their lives to each other, they begin to become close friends, effectively building confidence and bridging their considerable age gap. Also included in the cast are Desmond Harrington, Mary Kay Place, and John Goodman as Jennifer's hippie father. ~ Jason Clark, Rovi

The characters were captivating. The acting was great and to Christine Lahti I give a big high five. This movie has a lot of depth. It shows wonderfully how one person's love, compassion and trust can influence youth who are seeking.

You'll be glad you spent a couple hours with these characters and their journey. It is character driven story about a young girl trying to find herself and a middle aged man doing the same thing. Very good acting and movie storytelling. I don't know why more people haven't heard of this film. It is worthy of any serious movie goers time.

When I first picked up this movie at my local Blockbuster (back in 2002), and read the synopsis, I was skeptical as to how it would play out. But upon joining Blockbuster.com, I made it the very first movie I requested because I remembered being so satisfied by it that I'd been telling people it was one of my favorite movies of all time. Having seen it again only confirmed my opinion. I've always liked Brooks and Sobieski and their chemistry in this film is top-notch. Take good acting, visually appealing cinematography, and an awesome script and you've got a real winner here.

good flick, great characters and acting. Not too much happening, so not one for the action enthusiasts. Overall a satisfying movie

I was so taken with this movie. To get so deep into the relationship between these two people was masterful.I don't think I have ever seen a film that moved me so. Showing the relationship between these two such different people the way it does is Perfect. Christine Lahti did a wonderful job. Having spent several years in a video store, I can honestly say this is a must see for everyone.

I had to write a review about this because I am still thinking about the movie a few days later & I watched it more than once while I had it. I have recommended it to a few friends & thought it was very moving. It was very interesting and compelling to me for some reason. A coming of age for a confused girl that thankfully doesn't lead to anything weird with her infatuation with an older man. She just learns about herself and the world and becomes a more mature and complete person by opening up and learning to care; and sharing herself and her life with others.

Thanks to all that recommended this diamond in the rough. It was not as funny as a typical Albert Brooks movie. However, it was more touching than your standard Albert Brooks work. My wife and I both liked it and it was worth our while.

Wow, great movie, when I was flipping channels, I came across this on a film channel. Well written, akward at times, but we can all relate to bits of every character in this film. I highly recommend it. It looks like the cast had a great time making it.
