The true story of a major breakthrough in intelligence technology created during World War II provides the backdrop for this blend of mystery, romance, and espionage, based on the novel by Robert Harris. Tom Jericho (Dougray Scott) is a gifted mathematician who is working with the British government on the development and maintenance of the Enigma machine, an electronic device that allows Allied intelligence agents to decode scrambled messages sent by Germany military officers. But the emotionally fragile Jericho is buckling under both the pressure of his work and the collapse of his relationship with Claire Romilly (Saffron Burrows), a co-worker with whom he's fallen deeply in love. After suffering a minor breakdown, Jericho is sent on a leave of absence, but when he returns to work, a crisis awaits: it seems the Germans have instituted a new code that the Enigma is not yet able to crack, and Jericho is needed to help unravel Axis communiqués before an important convoy of troops and materiel sets sail. It is also suspected that a German undercover agent has infiltrated the Enigma project, and Wigram (Jeremy Northam) is determined to ferret them out. In the midst of all this, Jericho receives troubling news that Claire has gone missing -- and that a file of German messages waiting to be decoded was found at her home. As Jericho works against the clock to crack the new German code, he forms an initially uneasy alliance with Hester Wallace (Kate Winslet), Claire's roommate and a fellow member of the Enigma project, as they try to discover Claire's whereabouts. Enigma was co-produced by Mick Jagger, who has a keen interest in the history of the real-life Enigma project, and even owns one of the original Enigma decoding machines. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I have become addicted to good World War II movies. This film is certainly one of them, brimful of vivid characters and complex situations. If you have time, watch it twice, as you will pick up more details the second time around. Fascinating and different in terms of content, with a minimal amount of blood and gore.

An enjoyable movie but too many flashbacks confuse the plot.

Really intelligently done! A great movie that deserves to be watched multiple times.

I like the historical background of the story. It gives it a flavor of reality. The protagonist is very believable and not really a hero type at all.

Enjoyable, smart WWII thriller about code breaking, based on a true story, and notable for being a war film more about human intelligence then daring action. The script by Tom Stoppard is strong. A very good film, but some irritating flaws keep it from being great. With the exception of Kate Winslet, a lot of the acting is over the top. Also, the film wimps out on the true story, and misses some fascinating complexity, since in real life the lead character was gay, at a time where that alone was enough to win everyone's distrust. Further, the whole style of the film feels old-fashioned in a way that goes back and forth between charming and forced. Last, this is a really bad DVD transfer. Lots of soft spots, etc. And yet, I'd still urge people to see it.

This could have been the best movie ever. I was really looking forward to it. It could have been great like most of the WWII dramas. Unfortunately, it wasn't. A good illustration of why, was when they cracked the code. The music should have crescendoed, it should have been a point of releasing the tension from the story line. It wasn't. I had to rewind and watch again, because I thought I had missed it. Since it's not historically accurate as well, it doesn't provide any reason to watch this movie. I was sorely disappointed, and what could have been the best movie of the year, with a fascinating premise, ended up being only - so so.

I was hoping that the movie was more about code breaking, this movie was a let down.

This is a great movie, based on the well-known book by Richard Harris ("Pompei"), but the quality of this DVD release is just terrible. Very low resolution, which will play poorly on high-quality 16:9 displays. Be forewarned.
