Juliet of the Spirits is a fantastical showcase for Federico Fellini's vibrant imagery, starring his wife, Giulietta Masina, as the titular leading character. Juliet is a wealthy housewife who constantly fears her husband, Giorgio (Mario Pisu), is cheating on her. While she yearns for a peaceful intimate evening on the night of their 15th anniversary, the egotistical Giorgio has forgotten about it and instead arrives home with his eccentric friends. After a trip to a séance, Juliet is haunted by images from the spirit world, including obsessions from her past involving religion and her late relatives. With her sisters and mother prying into her life, Juliet seems to be seeking an inner peace amidst all the sexual temptations surrounding her. She meets her neighbor, Suzy (Sandra Milo), a showy pleasure-seeker who lives in a sensual playhouse. It appears that all of Juliet's family, friends, and fantasies demand that she loosen up and embrace sexual freedom, yet she remains chaste and dowdy, lamenting over her unfaithful husband. The reasons for Juliet's repression are not clearly defined by the narrative, despite glimpses into her supposed imagination. Forced to endure the constant bombardment of sexually charged imaginings, the demure Juliet retreats on her own. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

This movie is a must for Fellini fans. It's beautiful, weird, and downright bizarre. Fellini at his best.

Federico Fellini's creativity is fascinating to me. In this film, his wife, Giulietta (who had previously played a suffering wife who is unable to stand up to her brutish husband), plays a plain but sophisticated housewife who is surrounded by very colorful people, particularly those in the arts world. Psychologically, she is pulled in many directions in dealing with her husband's unfaithfulness. Fellini's use of Technicolor in this film makes the images all the more appealing to the eye.

Who else made movies like Fellini?. No one. "Juliet of the Spirits" has a little bit of everything and more...much, much more. A masterpiece from El Maestro.

This is a great film any way you slice it, but I recommend it especially to those who love the visual art aspects of movies. The costuming and makeup, the set design, the staging of each shot... this is a mind-blowing work of art in every conceivable way. Just stunning.

After watching it all I can say is that it was interesting and cheaper than buying LSD on my own. I might give Fellini one more chance.

Wonderful film! I had never before seen a Fellini film and I loved it. The sets, the costumes, the characters are all engagingly bizarre. Giulietta seems to be almost watching her life pass before her as one observes events in a dream sometimes. At times, it's hard to discern whether something is happening in actuality or in her imagination which makes the film even more involving for the viewer. I plan to watch this one again.

I keep hoping for fresh material/film with each Fellini flick because of the raves he gets. But except for Night of Cabaria, La Dolce Vita, or La Strada, this one is much like his other bizarre films like 8 1/2, etc. The inevitable tiresome circus scenes; the sporadic, non-sensical attempts at a story, flowered with weirdness that tells......NOTHING! AGAIN! Except for a change of characters or storyline, these weird wanderings are just that. Weird wanderings. Not too creative original in my book.

This is one more tiresome Fellini film, populated with bizarre, painted, posing creatures rather than profound or interesting characters, ceaseless chattering and laughter that sounds loud and false because Fellini looped in all his sound during post-production, and that eerie Rota music mixed with spooky wind sounds. The shame of this one is that it stars Giuletta Masina, who has put her artistic stamp to two of Fellini's best films: "La Strada" and "Nights of Cabiria". "Juliet of the Spirits" plays more like a nightmare of ridiculous, disjointed images than a coherent story. I can't believe it's meant to be sexy or titillating. What it is, is disturbing and annoying. I've finally figured out that Fellini has many of his creatures spouting self-important nonsense to no one at all in much the same way that a Greek chorus intones verse to the audience. But nonsense is still nonsense, and I see no sense to recommending this film, unless you enjoy watching circus scenes from hell.
