The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964)
Member Rating:
In this amusing fantasy, a combination of live-action and animated effects, Don Knotts plays scrawny bookkeeper Henry Limpet, who longs to help the U.S. after the outbreak of World War II. He becomes depressed after being turned down by the Navy, particularly after his pal George (Jack Weston) is accepted. When Henry takes a walk on the Coney Island pier with his wife Bessie (Carole Cook), he falls into the water and is transformed into a fish, complete with his reading spectacles. Henry finally gets to help the war effort by helping to track down Nazi U boats for the Navy. Andrew Duggan and Larry Keating play the admirals who spearhead the secret mission involving the transformed Henry. Longtime Disney production associate John Rose was the producer of this film, and the influence of the animation is evident. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

40 yrs before Nemo or Shark Tale there was The Incredible Mr. Limpet. This was really quite a piece of work for it's time. A mixture of live action and animation along with some very more stage lit type theatrical shots. All of this blends brilliantly and that coupled with the both sweet and entertaining performance by Don Knotts who sings rather dearly several tunes in the movie makes for a very good watch nearly 45 years after it was made. The story itself is so well written and quite clever and superior over many animated scripts written today.

Saw it many years ago as a child. When Don Knotts died I wanted my wife to see it. It is what it is, and that is great

A good family movie, my 11 year old sons watched it twice. The second time through he fast forwarded through the human part stating I like best when he's a fish. It's kind of stupid when he's a human. This comment about sums up the time in which the movie was made however it is still worth watching.

I first saw "Limpet" when I was 9, and love it as much today in my 40's as I did then. It's about being yourself, being a hero, finding your own path, loyal friends, patriotism, resilience, romance, and having a good imagination. One of the first films (if not thee first) to mix animation and live action. This film is a gem.

So stupid. A waste of time. Couldn't even watch the entire movie.

I shared this classic with my grandchildren and they loved it! It competes well with the animated movies of today. Highly recommend this move.

Have to take the movie for what it is! Don Knotts did his best for what was wrote into these roles. Very out dated for someone not exposed to this kind of films as youngsters.

I remember being disturbed by this movie as a kid, but thought my daughter would enjoy it. Well, his treatment of his wife is still disturbing. They could have resolved that issue, rather than showing her upset and him abandoning her. Even my 9-year old was upset.

A total waste of time - even my kids found it to be torture!
