Member Rating:
Helene Hanff's book 84 Charing Cross Road had previously been a TV program and a stage play before it was converted into this 1986 film. The scene is New York, 1949: Anne Bancroft plays a struggling writer and passionate bibliophile, who answers an advertisement from a rare-volumes bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road in London. Thus begins a two-decade romance by correspondence between Bancroft and Briton Anthony Hopkins, the man in charge of the overseas department of Marks and Company. Though several meetings are arranged, Bancroft and Hopkins never come face to face thanks to mitigating circumstances. But Anne finally makes it to London, and finds that much has changed. 84 Charing Cross Road was produced by Mel Brooks, the husband of star Anne Bancroft. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you like Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins, you should enjoy this quiet yet interesting movie that spans a multi year, long distance friendship. Both actors run true to form. The movie is not action packed or fast paced, but is still very enjoyable.

For those of us who delight in reading such as myself, this is a treasure. A different kind of "romance" -- but moreso of a transcontinental friendship bound together strongly through decade by a shared love of books. Very interesting as well to see Dame Judi Dench in an early role in her mid to late 30's probably. Hopkins is dashing in his non-fussy way as usual, and Anne Bancroft is a delight. Great commentary type film spanning the post WWII era through the 60's to early 70's.

This is a film for anyone who loves books and longs to have a relationship defined by the charm of distance. I did wonder about your warning "unsuitable for children," however. There's not a word or deed in this film that a kid could not watch.

Everytime I loan this book out to someone, I read it again and it makes me want to watch the moveie again. So I have put it on my list one more time. It is just a nice relaxing movie, to enjoy the coarseness that Anne Bancroft displays as opposed to Anthony Hopkins reserved character. I hope you enjoy the movie.

I've been on an Anthony Hopkins kick after seeing "Remains of the Day" and "Meet Joe Black". Other movies like "Howard's End" and "Shadowlands" didn't quite keep my interest as well, but "84 Charing Cross Road" met my expectations and was quite enjoyable. Different from the others plus a cute ending.

This movie chronicles life in post-war London (1949) through about 1969 as well as the changes in the two main characters during that time. Done in a way that is interesting and thought provoking. A worthwhile movie to view.

This is a small-scale film that should appeal to those with the same basic instincts as Helene Hanff: a fierce and tender regard for old-fashioned books, great authors, intimate, hands-on bookstores, and the culture and history of Great Britain that produced so many of them (authors AND bookstores). It also puts faces on the characters in the book. It is well-done, but does not venture very far beyond the ambit of the book itself, and relies to a great extent on readings of the correspondence between HH and Frank. I have a high regard for the subject matter, but wish the film had taken more liberties with the book version; if you've read the latter, there isn't that much more the film offers. Still, you can enjoy both.

If you like sentimental, romantic, and touching flicks you will find this a 5 Star, If not it's your loss.

We loved the movie, but had a defective dvd so we didn't get to see major parts of it. The acting is wonderful and the story is great.
