The Idolmaker (1980) Reviews

The Idolmaker (1980)
Member Rating:
The story of Philadelphia-based rock 'n' roll starmaker Bob Marcucci is given a pointed a clef treatment in The Idolmaker. Ray Sharkey plays Vincent Vacarri, who takes a couple of raw young kids (Peter Gallagher and Paul Land) and molds them into teen idols. If Gallagher and Land seem at times to be clones of Fabian and Frankie Avalon, then you've gotten the point. As played by Sharkey, Vacarri comes off as both maven and monster: he gives his boys everything they need professionally and everything they want personally, but it's subliminally clear that his interest is purely mercenary (incredibly, Bob Marcucci is the film's technical advisor). An excellent, clear-eyed view of show biz mechanics, The Idolmaker falters only in its anachronisms, notably the style of music performed by Vacarri's proteges. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I watched this movie years ago and have found a lot of those movies today do not appeal to me. I like it because it was a great movie with good entertainment

I seen this movie several times, years ago when it first came out and watched in repeat when HBO first started. Something recent made me think of it and mention it to my wife. She had never heard of it. I always thought it was a great film.

I had never heard of this movie until a couple of weeks ago when someone mentioned how good it was. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I thought the casting was really good. Ray Sharkey plays his role to a T. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone "act" Italian and all they do is make us look like idiots. Paul Land and Peter Gallagher were both also very good in their roles. The music wasn't bad, but I'm not going to go out and buy the soundtrack anytime soon. I still can't get some of the songs out of my head though. I would almost compare this movie to Eddie and the Cruisers in the sense that both go behind the scenes of musical entertainment to show what probably goes on in real life.

I really enjoyed this one. There is an understandable rivalry between the two stars, and Sharkey's determination to make Gallagher's character a star is both captivating and admirable. Definately worth renting.

This movie was entertaining to watch. It had some okay music. If you like 70's movies, you would like this one. It's funn to see Peter Gallagher as a young man. I kept waiting for something big to happen, but it never did.
