Arachnophobia (1990) Reviews

Arachnophobia (1990)
Member Rating:
Referring to the fear of spiders, Arachnophobia features a particularly deadly species of spider that manages to make its way from the Venezuelan rain forest to a small California town, thanks to the many oversights of entomologist Julian Sands. Yuppie doctor Jeff Daniels, fed up with the dangers inherent in big-city living, has resettled in this town on the assumption that nothing untoward could ever happen here to himself and his family. Before long, however, Daniels is trying to make sense of a series of sudden deaths-and to figure out why each of the corpses has been drained of blood. The audience, of course, knows that the culprits are those pesky South American spiders, which grow larger with each kill. To make matters worse, Jeff Daniels suffers from a profound case of arachnophobia. John Goodman supports the cast as a slovenly exterminator, and Frank Marshall, longtime producer of Steven Spielberg's films, makes his directorial debut in Arachnophobia. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

No, it is not a cinematic masterpiece, but fun and entertaining. I did not expect to like this movie, but I have seen it several times over the years and really enjoyed it. It is definitely more of a comedy than thriller, but some creepy moments. I would recommend it.

Harry from Dumb and Dumber, Happy Gilmore's grandma and Mimi from the Drew Carey show minus the eye makeup, what more could you ask for in a scary movie??? I watched this movie in theatres with my dad when I was 9 years old and I'm pretty sure it took about 10 years before the fear wore off. If you want something to scar your children this movie should do the trick just be aware of the fact you'll have to check their bed for spiders every night indefinitely.

Awesome movie. I saw it years ago and liked it and watched it again recently and loved it. It is just so fun and creepy at the same time. The characters are great and seeing my son and his girlfriend all wrapped up and creeped out while watching this funny/scary movie was priceless. I plan on buying this movie as soon as I can find it.

I had seen this movie in the Drive-In back when it came out and loved it! For me personally it is one of my favorite movies. One review states it is more of a comedy than a thriller, and I agree.. The Character's lives are not very detailed or in depth in the movie. Some parts of the filming are dark. Story line does hold up very well. Jeff Daniels plays the part very well, and Dan Goodman (In My Opinion) is not in the movie enough! The movie lengh is perfect. Not too drawn out or over done, but leaves you wanting to come back for more. And even though Arachnophobia is a real phobia, the movie makes you want to laugh about it, but at the same time makes you look twice at a Daddy Long Leggs.

This is, de facto. the best spider movie... EVER. It runs somewhat under the radar due to its subject matter - spiders- and the cast, but you very quickly become a member of the town, just because of the cast, and when you do, it's on! See this film.

Just saw this on Sci Fi the other day. I barely remember it in the theaters. It was not good in it's time as the story line is to out there. Come Hollywood new spiders with 10 times more deadly venom taking over a small town in the middle of nowhere? How much can we take. The Spiders didn't even look real in most cases and the acting was poor to say the least. This is 1 1/2 stars max and that is being generous. Renting the move maybe if you like that type of story but buying? Never sorry won't even add it to my bootleg DVDs. This is was barely worth a Twilight show, maybe the .99 Cent theater but only if I sneak in my own refreshments.

Wow - just watched the movie in the background while doing some work. There's no way this movie could capture your attention fully - I imagine that would be a painful experience to have paid to watch this in the cinema. You'd be on the edge of your seat - not because you're scared, but because you'd be trying to make your mind up whether to walk out of the cinema and go do something more interesting instead... like grocery shopping or something. DON'T BOTHER WATCHING THIS MOVIE. It's just horrible. It's not even bad enough to be funny. My advice is to watch "Eight Legged Freaks" instead. At least that doesn't take itself seriously.

This movie was SO STUPID ! These spiders actually hunted PEOPLE ! Ya....sure they do ! The acting is pathetic - - only real bright spots were seeing the spiders themselves - which were FREAKY FRIDAY, baby ! John Goodman tried his best to be Bill Murray in trying to rid the varments - as he did in Caddy Shack - but failed MISERABLY...and ended up looking and sounding STUPID !
