UFC 1: The Beginning (1994) Reviews

UFC 1: The Beginning (1994)
Member Rating:
The UFC is a fierce competition of wrestling, fighting, and martial arts. In this first bout, eight men competed for the principle title winner in the UFC. The first fight was a bare-knuckles brawl in a steel octagon with no rules or weight limits. The video caused some controversy because it was a bout that bore no regulations or rules for the contestants. ~ Forrest Spencer, Rovi

Although yes the commentary is bad at times this is a great introduction into the magic of the UFC. No rules except no biting, groin kicks or something. I will be renting ALL of these!

Because I've only been watching UFC and WEC since January 2007, I decided to rent this DVD to see the genesis of the sport. Wow! This is a great rent if you're new to MMA fighting. As you watch this DVD you can come to understand the reasoning behind weight classes and why the sport has evolved in the way it has. It also gives an awesome example of how important grappling is to this sport.

If you want an introduction to MMA watch something after UFC 40. This was enjoyable in that it showed Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock, two greats in the UFC, and it shows the roots of the UFC. The fights aren't great. The announcing is laughable and annoying. But you do also get a good idea of how powerful Gracie Jiu Jitsu is and to a lesser extent Shootfighting.

Despite a few moments of outstanding action, this DVD comes across as somewhat lackluster to the fan of today's UFC. At this early stage of its development, the UFC was much more concept than sport and mixed martial arts was an unfamiliar idea at best. For the real, tried and true fans of the sport, this DVD is well worth watching simply for the historical appeal. Newer fans should probably avoid this disc in favor of nearly any of the newer discs or either season of The Ultimate Fighter.

All the other reviews already said it....watch this mainly for the historic view(s) of MMA. This was THE beginning. The best of the best came in and only one walked out with the money. Bare knuckles (except for the one wacko), no rules, no time limits. Already said, commentating stinks and the fights are short, but if you want to see where MMA started, this is for you.

Admittedly, the present day fights for the UFC are more exciting and interesting, but if you are a fan of the UFC or even just curious about Cage Fighting, this is where it all began. This is a historical video. It's interesting how the referee doesn't seem to know how exactly he is supposed to react to certain situations. Half the fighters want to start fighting again after they already tapped out. Too late pal! Broken bones, flying teeth. I think even half the participants were in disbelief themselves.

this is the original presentation unedited and free of comercial concern. I found it very enjoyable for the purity of the contest and originality of the setting. Here you will see the real no rules compitition before the promoters started seeing dollar sighns. It is campy and frightening but only here will you see how different disciplins work in true conflict. Do please note that this is only one on one and too a certain degree you may see the art of nations as the tried to invent the best martail art.

UFC all the way....crazy. One fight over 2 min. It was a great spectacle. If you're into the UFC, this is for you!

The fights in this are not exciting. The announcers are horrid. The production value is even worse. If you are going to watch this, watch it for historical appeal, how much UFC has changed throughout the years, and to see Royce Gracie devour his opponents in like 20 seconds without taking one punch. If you are expecting todays UFC then this is just going to be a comedy at best.
